Your Scottish-Deerhound.com Newshound, Banrigh, here again reporting from the Scottish Kennel Club (SKC) Championship show held at Ingliston, Edinburgh 23rd August 2008.

A late start to this show as we were on after the Greyhounds in Ring 16. Just as well as the benching where we collected our numbers was quite a distance away from the ring and my handlers aren’t always the quickest at getting from A to B. Unfortunately, our ring was inside in the main exhibition hall right in the middle. So it was rather noisy as we were next to the terrier grooming area – say no more! It was also difficult to chat and group together with any Deerhound friends as all sides of the ring were also a thoroughfare. My handler was disappointed as it was the only sunny day of her holiday in Scotland and she wanted to be outside! You just can’t please some people. Usually, this show is held outside in marquees but perhaps the ground was too wet this year to do so this summer.

The one saving grace of being inside is that it was too dark for my handler to take any photos. So I was spared the embarrassment of her bobbing up and down trying to pretend to know what she was doing on the photo front. Instead I persuaded Rob to take some video footage which is better anyway as I do like to see hounds on the move.

The entry was fairly small at 62, probably due to the August bank holiday in England. However, the judge Sue Finnett (Hyndsight) still had some lovely dogs to go over.

Dogs

First up was the puppy dog class which although had just one entry was won by a lovely hound GENTOM RENOWN. This pup has been doing well with a 1st at Leeds and a 2nd at the Hound Show previously and was best puppy today. GENTIEHUN TAIN won the junior dog has he did at the Hound Show. He was handled by Sid Taylor. Second was another nice Scottish hound GLENFOYBLE IN THE GLOAMING owned by Mary Foy with LEOCH GARRY coming third and making it a Scottish hound clean sweep.

Yearling dog had three entries with CLAONAIGLEN LOMOND owned by Nell MacBean coming first with HEARTHSTANE MACALLAN second and MENTEITH DAIRG third.

The largest dog class of the day was post graduate dog. This was a strong class of 8 entries with the added excitement of the dogs having to cope with an emergency evacuation of the hall. Then if that wasn’t enough, on return they had to listen to a number of tannoy announcements explaining that the evacuation was due to a person smoking in the disabled toilets. We know our handlers can be daft. We don’t need to be told this at a deafening volume! Anyway first was ROMANIE RYE AT GREYHAWKS, second LYART YES MINISTER and third LYART YOSSARIAN OF SHENVAL.

Limit dog followed with WOLFSCASTLE WOOD MELICK coming first and receiving the Dog CC. Congratulations to the Brodies. This dog has done very well this year also winning best dog at the Breed Show. Second was DORRATOR NATHANIEL AT AONACHDUBH and third ROSSLYN NEILL.

The reserve Dog CC went to the open dog winner WILD WEST VON DER OELMUEHLE with GREYHAWKS ROMANIE  ROM ShCM coming second and CH.GREYFLAX THE MIGHTY QUINN TO KILBOURNE third.

Bitches

The bitches started off with a really nice puppy bitch class. First was KILBOURNE TEINE, second AILEYMILL'S JEWEL and third a happy and lively MOIREACH TRESHNISH who kept Marjorie McKinnon on her toes.

Junior bitch followed with GUINIVERE STARSHIRE FROM KILBOURNE coming first, second LADYGROVE BELLE STARR and third GLENFOYBLE FILLIBERRY. Yearling bitch was won by HEARTHSTANE BRORA with second place going to GHILTAN HARVEST FOR LADYGROVE and third DORRATOR ARDDUN AT AONACHDUBH. All these young deerhounds bode well for the future.

There were nine entries for the post graduate bitch class. The first was GHILTAN TIERCEL who also went on to win the RCC, congratulations. Second was KILLOETER LEYLA and third CELTIC QUEEN. The Limit bitch class with seven entries followed which was my class and I was beaten by two lovely hounds KILBOURNE IDUNA AT INVERCLYDE (first) and MARANDIKE EBONYS CHOICE TO WOLFSCASTLE (second) with me coming third DRAWING DOWN THE MOON TO CUSIDH.

Finally, a very competitive open bitch class with the winner and Bitch CC going again to CH.GREYFLAX WATERLOO SUNSET. This bitch really is on a roll. Congratulations to the Baileys. Second was PINGLEHOLL RUBY AT KILBOURNE and third a bitch I particularly liked KILLOETER KALANCHOE.

So then my handler eventually got back out to the sunshine and I had a short journey back over the Forth Bridge in the van to Fife. It was great seeing my deerhound friends again. Twice in one month too, this is unusual for me as I don’t seem to get out much really. Many thanks to the organizers, stewards and of course our Judge Sue Finnett. Well done.
