I live in Scotland and I am still getting used to can I clap your dog (I will let Sid explain that one)
Well, where to begin? I remember a little child, who had obviously been very well brought up to be safe around dogs, asking me 'Is your doggy a clapping doggy?' Since the doggy in question was a Deerhound, and used to my kids, I had no hesitation in assuring her that yes, indeed my doggy was a clapping doggy. The child then proceeded to pet the aforementioned doggy and make a huge fuss of him. Basically, to clap a dog means to stroke and make much of it.
