The Who's Online? counter on the front page of the site seems to be giving some very high readings lately. It always reports correctly people who are logged on, but today it was readin as 53 guests. I'm pretty sure there was more like 6 and 3 members (9 in total). So I wouldn't read too much into those numbers, certainly not all the time.
I've made a note of it here to remind myself to investigate further in the future...

and there are always lots of guests there also
I think the readings may well be correct which would be just great for the site, and google rankings.

A lot of people lurk, and are too shy to post or have other reasons only known to them

I agree a lot of people just lurk until they get the confidence to post, or until something crops up that they have an opinion about. I use the Google analytics on the site to see more reliably how many visitors we are getting.
