TOPIC: fatty lumps....

fatty lumps.... 3 years ago #10532

Hi I've noticed Leah has got a few fatty lumps, they don't bother her and being shaggy you can't see them, just wondered if this was normal?? She is 6 and has been spayed, not sure if that has anything to do with it???

Cara had a few of those. We didn't do anything about them and they didn't seem to bother her
and then they just disappeared. Not sure what they are.

I would take her to the vet (sorry just read your thread on vets and vet bills!)only because I had a lurcher that had fatty lumps. Never worried about them as they were lipomas but a huge one came up on his chest and following a needle aspiration it was found to be a malignant tumour. I am not trying to be a scaremonger but it doesn't do to become complacent over these things. Good luck

Xena has a couple of subcutaneous lumps and Bree has one. Their's are definately subcut cysts as they are only attached under the skin and no deeper. We don't worry about them. I would only worry if they changed. We did have Xena's checked when they first appeared and Bree's was looked at when they had their shots just to be sure.

They are not usually anymore than fatty lumps (lipoma), if you can get you your fingers around them and move them. If they have that harder feel to them or they are growing quickly and are firmly attached they could be more sinister. It would be for peace of mind to get them checked. Once checked just examine them say monthly to make sure they have not changed in size or definition.I hope this helps.

A lot of our older dogs in all breeds have had lumps. As a general rule I like to check you can move them, if you can I don't really worry.
Always worth a quick check at the vets though for peace of mind if you are not sure.
I think Deerhounds do just get a lumpy as they get older........

oh you can certainly get hold of them under the skin and move them, they are about the size of a pea?? so I'm quite happy that they are just fatty lumps, I just noticed that she seems to have developed 2 or 3 more during the last year - it must be her age!!

I do check them regularly, and if they got bigger, or caused her any pain then I would certainly get them checked out

I know my friend has 2 Weimaraners and one of hers gets small lumps which she has removed by the vet, I guess in a smooth coated dog they would be unsightly!!

I don't think it is limited to older dogs. Mac has just had his 3rd birthday and he has one.
When I 1st noticed it , was the size of a pea. It then grew to the size of a kidney bean. The vet had a look , said it was nothing to worry about, but would remove it if we wanted. I don't like putting the dogs through unnecessary surgery so decided to leave it. It seems to be dissipating and growing smaller again now.

We have noticed some on our various dogs, had them removed and checked out, all turned out to be benign, in fact I have one in the small of my back, had it for years, never worried about it, but we always get the dogs checked out...... go figure.....
Short answer, I'd get it checked, but don't worry yet.....

Just found a little pea sized lump at the back of Murphy's neck (scruff) I thought it may be the microchip, but reading these posts has helped me. I'm going to keep an eye on it, well feel of it as you can't see it because of his coat, but if it gets bigger am going to get it checked out.

Jock has 2 as well, had them for ages but they havent changed in shape size or texture at all but will keep an eye on it! Dougal has not got any.

We had an oldie once with fatty lumps and the vet said what do you expect at her age!! On the other hand we also had her daughter and she had one that was cancerous (only found it when it exploded) but it was successfully removed. So as others have suggested be aware of it and seek advise if you feel you need to.
