TOPIC: Eating her own poo!

Eating her own poo! 2 years, 11 months ago #12089

Can anyone tell me why deerhounds eat their own poo and how to stop it as Odelle has done it most of the time we have had her which is about 7mths?

What a wonderful title!!!

Ive only experienced one bitch who did this after having had a litter, which I suspect was the initiating factor.
There are herbal remedies that claim to help but Ive never tried them.
Most simple solution is follow with a shovel, pick up and dispose of any waste immediately.

Picing up after 4 dogs at the same time make imediate disposal a little hard.
More concerned about the reasons why she is doing it. Didnt know if it might be some sort of deficiency in diet etc.
could I ask where you have seen the herbal remedies?

I was picking up after 7 hounds but used to isolate the offender as soon as she had finnished.
The herbal product was from Dorwest herbs. As for a deficientsy (sp) I,m not sure going to do a bit of research.

Yes I guess I could try to take her straight in afterwards......hadnt thaught of that.
Would appreciate hearing results of any research......thanks for that

Just checked a "Bruce Fogle" vet book and he reckons it can relate to puppyhood as most will scavenge, but he also adds that it could be a lack of digestive enzymes and to supplement the diet.
May well be worth a try.

Try pineapple - the crushed up sort that comes in tins. Say a tablespoon mixed up with her food. The other one that's supposed to help with coprophagia (the Sunday name for eating poop) is courgettes added to the food.

Oddelle says "Thank You" so will my kids as her breath always smells of poo when she goes to wake them up for school in the morning.....

Just looked at Richard Allports book and web site (natural healthcare for pets) he is suggesting;
Homeopathy; Calc.carb
Flower and Gem Remedies; Wild Rose and Chicory.
You can purchase these direct from his site he is a qualified vet as well as a Homeopathic one too.
Hope this helps.

I got tablets from the local petshop which didn't work for us but may for others. Loki just grew out of his coprophagia (Sorry I like big words).

Check what your feeding as well, as some of the stuff out of the food
might not be being digested properly, so is passing through, that can cause some dogs to eat
poo.

We used pineapple juice. Don't use tinned though as the enzymes that make it unflavourable are destroyed in the canning process. We used tetrapacked pineapple juice.
The dogs love pineapple and when we have pizza they always get pineapple chunks.

Thank you all for the advice. Will let you know how she gets on with the pineapple juice

When my dogs do that kind of things, I give them a "bullrich" tablet, or something similiar. It is used also for humans with too much gatric juice. It doesnt cost much, and sems to work.
