Mac developed a lump on his left hind leg when he was about 12 months old. It was diagnosed as "Calcinosis Circumscripta". Which the Vet said is apparently quite common in young, large breed dogs. He had the lump removed and he has not had a problem since - thankfully.

I was wondering if anyone else had heard of this and just how common it is.

Incidentally, if anyone does discover a lump on their dog I found this site useful ;

Hi there,

Our 5 year old deerhound has just been to the vets today to have a biopsy on a lump that she's had for some time. In total I think she's got around 5 or 6, but they sound very similar to what you described. We get the results back in a week, so fingers crossed everything will be ok.

The lumps aren't painful, but just sit within the layers of her skin.

The link to the site has proved useful too.

Many thanks

Mac has developed another little lump along his side in the skin covering his stomach. It is not the same as the other one. According to the Vet is just a fatty deposit underneath the skin which, has grown from the size of a grain of rice to a pea. The Vet said not to worry and just to keep an eye on it.

Hope everything is OK with your hound louise.

Willow's lumps sound pretty much as you said. I suppose as deerhounds are mostly skin and bone you can't really miss them can you.

Sounds like a lipoma which is, I believe, quite common in dogs and they can grow quite quickly. My old lurcher, Alfie had a huge one removed from this chest wall not so long ago and that grew rapidly. Hope all will be ok

Xena has a couple of lumps which the vet said were some kind of cyst. He put pressure on one and it disappeared. We didn't touch the other one and it hasn't done anything.

Recently I have found a lump on Bree. It is within her skin and is positioned at the top of her shoulder blade. Feels like a seborrheic keratoses, raised and rough surface. Originally I thought it was a welt caused from playing but it hasn't gone away. We are going to have to get it checked out just for my own piece of mind.

Willow has now had her biopsy and should get results within a week. We now have a very miserable hound at home, who hasn't stopped whinging since we picked her up last night. She's now sporting a scar Frankenstein would be proud of, so I can't really blame her. We had to pick up extra drugs from the vet today in the hope to keep her quiet but to no avail. I'm not sure if she's actually in any pain or she's just plain livid that we've inconvenienced her, funnily enough though the theatrics only occur when she's in earshot otherwise pretty quiet.

It's nice to come across some like-minded Deerhound owners - and refreshing to know that Willow's relatives, reveal so many familiar personality traits and escapades.

Good news! Apparently it appears Willow's got fatty follicular cysts that shouldn't cause her much trouble. All seems well, but glad we got them checked out. Her stiches come out on Thursday which will be a relief as I think they're getting pretty itchy now. We'll just have to keep an eye on her lardy lumps, as she does seem to have quite a few.
All is well though and that's the main thing:)

Great news Louise. They are probably what Xena has. What a relief for you.

I have had a horrible month,
Dear Lullaby devoloped a lump sadly it is a mast cell tumour

She has had it removed, a huge scar as they have to take 3 to 5 cms of flesh away around it, she is now on piriton for life I have to stay positive that we have caught it early enough she has had to have two operations in ten days as the path lab wanted my vet to remove more, she has huge scars for something so little.

moral is always get lumps bumps checked out

Thank goodnes her lungs liver etc are all clear

I have decided not to put her through any chemotherapy

Got everything crossed that she'll be OK.
I went into major panic mode when we found the first lump on Mac as we had only just lost
our Lab Conah to cancer, I just couldn't believe that it was happening again. Thankfully it wasn't anything too serious that time, but I am forever running my hands over every inch to make sure nothing new has appeared.

Good to hear that both Willow and Lullaby are recovering from their respective operations. Never easy to deal with and wish you all the best. Elise
