TOPIC: Mick - our adopted hound grooming advice!

Mick - our adopted hound grooming advice! 2 years, 6 months ago #16766

Hi there!
We are the proud adoptive parents of Mick a 6 year old deerhound; he belonged to friends of ours who emigrated to Australia in June this year, and as he can't bear the heat, we took him. I've never owned a dog before and boy what an amazing first dog to have, I'm hooked for life on deerhounds, he is the perfect dog!!
I do, however, need a little advice on grooming. He dislikes being brushed intensely and rather than him getting used to it, he seems to be getting worse, now running as soon as he sees a comb or brush. I do try and tease it gently so as not to pull too hard, I've used various brushes/combs that were left for him but to no avail.
I, sorry, we, would be extremely grateful for any advice/guidance on this issue, many thanks.

Well done you for taking the boy on. You'll find that Deerhounds are habit-forming, though. One is never enough.

If his coat's badly matted, you might want to think abut having him clipped off and starting again from scratch. Plenty of bribery usually works when you're teaching a dog to accept grooming.

Thanks for that, he's not really that matted, although there is one hat looks like will have to be cut out. Think the problem is if I don't do something soon, he will be badly matted, bless him, he'll do ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING for a biscuit normally, but not this!!

Just a thought, perhaps your brush/comb are too severe for your hound ? or maybe he's just a big wus ! I use a horse brush on my hounds, they love it, it's not too harsh & they probably compare it it being stroked/fussed.

Hi there and welcome to the site. If the dog is not too badly matted he has obviously been groomed regularly before, perhaps you could contact his previous owners and ask them what they used to do. Good luck and keep us informed.

I was going to say what Pam said! she beat me to it. Murphy looks scraggy after a day or two and needs regular brushing, so this fella has obviously been brushed. Lots of perseverance and bribery, because he needs to be brushed or he will gt matted and then it will hurt.

Good luck.
