What do you mean with " chipped " ? Is the bone affected ?
My various female deerhounds had everything from broken toes ( 2x, clean breaks ) to rips and tears/cuts in their feet , over a torn ligament ( once ) somewhere in a paw to dislocated toes ( 2 or 3 times over the years ) . The one that took the longest to heal was the ligament , made worse by the winter condidtions as the (outside) toe of course moved a lot in the snow. All I did was homoeopathy and eventually a shoe with a hard sole for the walks . This is basically I do for all foot injuries - both broken toes completely healed up in about 3 weeks ,same goes for the dislocated ones and with wonds it depends . I do use a cleansing cream ( befedo ) on some wounds , at least intitally .
If there is a lot of swelling I usually use " heparin " ointment , which helps to bring it down . And , always , always the homoeopathic arnica pellets ((and whatever else remedy might aply to the injury ) .
All the best - he will be fine again in a jiffy !!!!

I have no experience with this kind of injury ( at least I think I don't - we do not often take xrays of my girls ...) - I would perhaps give some supplement that strengthens bones ( green lip mussel or similar ), symphytum might be of good help , too .
Your vet will have her/his ideas also....
Hope your dog/his toe heals well and quickly so !!

Toe injuries on sight hounds!
This sounds painful, did they recommend you strap the paw up to minimise movement?

NO,toilet walks on lead, then bathe toe/foot in epsom salts.he can walk ok and go up and down the stairs.like I said before, the vet has cut the nail right back.the vet i use is one of the best in the area for sighthounds/running dogs.the only thing is with him on some toe injuries he wants to amputate.which on one or two injuries other methods have been used with success. Nice dog Trevor..and good lamping countryside...
Wish we had some flat crop fields here...just hilly rough grass and scrub..
Cracking jump on your boy...bet it took hours to train him up.. cant get my big lump to clear anything like that...

What a beautiful , well conditioned hound he is ! Glad , he has a job to do ...!!!

Re:Milo,s toe 1 year, 5 months ago #27145

[img/] What lovely pictures and that jump is awesome, my Lurchers scaled 6 foot fences with ease, but Deerhound has never been taught, can't risk him leaping out of the garden

We have baby gates in our and he doesn't jump them, also a 4 foot fence to stop them getting in the main garden and touch wood, hasn't attempted that one either.

What a lovely dog Trevor. When you say he is a working dog, what sort of work does he do?

I sent his pics on to some friends ( more working type deerhound breeders and also to greyhound owners - ex racers , now lurecourserrs and hunters...) , all extremely impressed with that combination - one wishes the modern dhs would have some of his build . Do you have any puppy pics or of his parents ? And , how old is he on the pics and what is his hight /weight roughly ?
