TOPIC: Best way to deal with the squits?

Best way to deal with the squits? 2 years ago #19298

My poor babe (Twist) has had really bad runny poos (can never spell the proper word properly) all day. Gave him some boiled rice and chicken at lunch time which didnt stay in very long. He had a couple of slices of dry toast at tea time. That has stayed in so far!

Obviously will take him to the vet if still bad by the end of tomorrow but just wondered if anyone here knew of an alternative?

Starve dog for 24 hrs then give plain food, scrambled egg and normal biscuit, rice and biscuit, bread and gravy etc. Trick is in the starve bit.

Thanks Hairybeasty.....definately no blood else he would have been to the vet straight away.....no chance of poisoning either. He never leaves my side long enough to get into anything he shouldnt apartfrom when he is asleep.

How long has he been bad for?How old is he?Have you recently changed diet? What do you think has caused this?

Re:Best way to deal with the squits? 2 years ago #19304

Been poorly since yesterday early evening (Thursday). Have not changed (until after he was ill then I gave him boiled rice and chicken) diet but did put an egg on top of his food but that is not knew as I quite often do that.
Twist is nearly 5yrs old.

Unusual to have squits then. Are you sure he hasnt snuffled a bit of something yukky while on a walk, been in the bin(mines a nightmare for that).Weird to have developed it with no changes..even had some stress in the home..usually some cause..think....

Dont know but certainly it works from dog to human.. cat to human..human to human..from some of the yukky things I have seen dogs eat they have really strong stomachs..but it depends on the bug..Uncooked egg wont help as squits is due to inflamation of the gut and anything rich, spicy, full of protein/fat will make it worse..advise would be to starve 24 hrs ..take it or leave it

My Ben had it last year and it lasted for about 2-3 days and then cleared up of its own accord.
I think that he drank from a tank at the top of the garden, by the greenhouses, that had been use by the previous owner of the property to collect rainwater which had then become stagnant. I emptied the tank and he's not had a repeat since.

The fasting is a good idea to let his stomach settle and hope that whatever was causing the problem has been flushed out. Sometimes it is wise to let these things run their course but I have heard of people giving their dogs immodium but I have no idea of the dosage. I'm sure your vet can help in that area.
Wishing Twist a speedy recovery

We normally starve for 24 hours and then a few very small meals of small amounts of boiled rice with a little chicken or scrambled egg on day two then gradually increase to "normal" food. Hope ypour pooch is better soon

There has been a bug going round, that seems to have been passing from dogs to humans and back again, think it was someone on LL that had it with there dogs, the dogs became ill,
then human, now the dogs have got it again,
you could try some slippery elm to help settle everything.

Thanks everyone for the advice, he is very slightly brighter today. Little and often is the name of the game today I think.

Mad busy at the moment as I am at Milton Keynes day after tomorrow for a five day event and also staff on two other markets at the weekend. Also doing BBC Good Food Show in June so got to cook about £30K worth of stock just for that Our Shop and wholesale picking up after the slow January......bet you wish you never asked now...lol
What puppies have you got, are they Deeries or Terrier?
