Took Layla today to see an osteopath, he's been highly recomended
hour and half drive, and only charges a tenner, so not expencive,

Since having layla, ive always noticed her being stiff after being out,
especaly after lieing down, just recently i noticed her catching her hocks when trotting,
like they rub together, so thought id just get him to check her out, was hopeing it would just be - because shes been knocked or something like that,
seems its a little more than a knock, and it could account for many of the problems we have had with her, especaly her bad season.
shes had a large tear to her stomach & TFL (Tensor Fascia Latae),on the left side and a small amount on her right, its the muscle that runs from the inside leg to the stomach.

unfortunaly as scar tisue has formed its affecting her function, not scerously - but there is a small amount of function loss - theres not much that can be done, as no one knows when it happened - its not causeing any pain, so its just going to be a case of let her do what she wants, she also has stiffness in her neck and lower part of her spine.

After he checked layla over, i got loads of advice off him for myself,
as he treats humans as his main job, turns out im knackered aswell .

Just to add, if anyone wants to know what TFL is, its on page 6.

poor Layla but at least you know why she is stiff. Did you know much about Laylas history when you got her?

Only little bits, mostly she had nothing done with her
and was left to her own devices a lot of the time,
medical hystory(sp) nothing at all.

Have contacted a local physio - to see about laser treatment,
see if that helps at all.

Thanks for that - we do have one just 5 mins down the road, at westhoughton track,
it was newly built couple of years ago, for their dogs - think i will see what the
physio says, if it will help - will ask them, i dont know if the supplement would work,
will look in to it though.

Laylas only 21 months old, so still a baby yet.

Oh,not as if she's been worked too young then...although maybe, but it's not as likely as if she was a lurcher or greyhound..
What do you think caused the injury?

Green lipped mussel extract is supposed to help with joints/mobility ect but I suppose a lot of other things work equally well

Deffanatly not been worked - she would more than likily run away from it than chase lol
although last week she did try to chase a duck through the water.

I havent a clue what could have cause it, could have been anything
its worse on one side more than the other, so could have been
shes over streched or slipped - anything, it could have just been a weekness there,
shes never shown any pain or any problems except the stiffness and from when i got her
ive never been able to get her stamina up, it s up a lot more now than it was,
as when she first came, she had to rest every so often and couldnt do more than 30 mins walking, at the moment if shes playing - its 5 mins then shes done, any longer then that
and she sleeps for england.

Poor little Layla. So young to have injuries. How to be proactive about it Chook. I'm sure you'll get her the best care possible. Don't forget to have yourself seen to as well. You're much too young to be knackered

I got the chance to speak to an ortho vet on friday,
took my friend down to the vets with her foster dogs, for there vax's
so took the chance to question the vet
best advice she can give me is to do physio on the leg, i have to put pressure
on the muscle - whilst streching and flexing the leg, for about 30 secs a time,
dont think she realises just how strong layla is lol,
but there is a physio local, so need to get the vets approval first,
then i will be taking her down.

Ironstone - i will be getting myself sorted, its gone on for to long (over 10 years),
all the doc has ever done is prescribe painkillers and send me to physio,
which has not done much tbh.

I found a McTimony Chiropacter really good when Ben had a problem with his back. There are many of them that treat with animals as well as people. They have a web site and you can ask them for details of the nearest suitable practitioner near to you. I don't know if they can help with the injury but they can be invaluable in helping with problems with the neck and spine.

I was recommended by a Deerhound breeder who takes her dogs along once a year for a check up.

The chyropractor is verry simler to the osteopath, the excersizes they would normaly do for
her injury cant be done, as shes just to large, they would normaly do traction,
so it strechs the leg down, useing her own weight,
a lot of the excersizes though you can do at home, theres an E book if your intrested -
www.back-in-balance.co.uk...ck_problems.htm

it is a good book, and has loads of infomation in it, the strech's im already doing,
the osteo did sort her back out.

The woman who's produced that book, is the nearest one to me - but after a friends experance
with her, i wouldnt waste my time on ringing her.

Would defanatly recomend to anyone to take their dog to a osteo,
for a check up.

Its either that whats changed Layla, or someone been spiking her water with speed
i now have a crazy dog, just a good job i was on call last night, as at around 1 this morning,
she was bouncing off the walls, running round the house - jumping on the couch then running as fast as she could and bouncing on the dog beds, she has more energy than she knows what to do with - hopefully once the vets have checked everything over and aggreed, she will be off to see a physio, she only live 5 mins up the road and shes quite happy to see us, solong as we have the vets approval.
