Any Ideas? 1 year, 5 months ago #27513

I haven't been around for a long time due to family problems and computer problems. So it seems wrong in a way to only arrive when I want 'help' but it is for Brice so please forgive me?

Brice started dripping weak blood from his penis intermittently at the beginning of this month. He has been on antibiotics for almost all of the month and today has had an ultrasound of his bladder and prostate which is inconclusive. He still has blood in his urine, he is eating well and apparently his normal happy self (ok he has two puppies in his life and the youngest he is annoyed about as it is under six months but apart from that he is happy).

I know having a dog with bloody urine, entire and almost six the prostate is the most common reason but that is ruled out. Tests are now aiming higher to his kidneys and something nasty is not ruled out but I am wondering if anyone has knowledge of similar non-specific symptoms who can shed any light?

He is eating and drinking well, bodily functions bar blood in urine are normal and, apart from being annoyed about the younger pup being added (he only likes them when they learn to respect him ) nothing in his behaviour indicates anything wrong.

Thanks
Sue, Brice and the gundog gang

In human beings the first thing which springs to mind is a neoplasm or carcinoma
For a more systemic approach ask your vet to check for 1) renal causes; 2) extra-renal causes (bladder, prostate;3) systemic causes (a.o. coagulation disorders).

Thanks, he goes back on wed am to discuss bloods drawn today and I will ask about coagulation issues. Extra-renal are pretty much ruled out, renal are under investigation but anti-coag haven't been addressed so worth a check esp if renal results on wed are still inconclusive.

Hope it´s something like that. The fact that he's been his normal self apart from the haematuria should keep us optimistic, although they're masters at hiding their 'discomforts'.

Re:Any Ideas? 1 year, 5 months ago #27545

Your vets should be up on the play!! To me, obvious would be urinary calculi, urolithiasis as an extreme. Also consider cystitis/Urinary tract infection. Check for clostridial diseases. Do you leave near lots of bracken - has he eaten any???
How much blood is he passing - just a wee trace?, fairly blood stained or lots with blood clots?? I'd guess that as you have noticed, it would be a lot! Does he strain when he is passing urine?

Re:Any Ideas? 1 year, 5 months ago #27546

Ohh by the way I wasn't being rude about your vets, I meant they will be on the ball and hopefully have it all in hand and under control! I have just a few wee thoughts that are out of the box.

Hi. We had a similar symptoms recently with our terrier and it transpired to be bladder stones - may help to read the thread on bladder stones. I assume your vet has checked for crystals in the urine? I wish you well and hope it the cause is found and easily resolved. Best wishes, Ailish

Sorry I haven't replied before but seem to be on a rollercoaster with him and one of my others.

So Brice has had calculi ruled out both on scan and urine sampling, he has no infections and prostate also seems excluded. Initially I noted the blood as drips on the floor of weak blood and I needed to figure which dog it was as I have a pup who is reaching the age of her first season so it could have been that.

You can see some blood in his urine but it is not pink and microscopically he has way too many red cells. Clotting issues have pretty much been discounted and he is going back in next wed for a more thorough scan (he had a basic USS last week but next week he sees a specialist with better equipment) and a fine needle aspiration to send a urine sample for cytology. The diagnosis my vet wants to rule out is Transitional Cell Carcinoma - well obviously it would be if it is ruled out.

Brice is not yet 6 (quite) so I will continue to push to find an answer esp while he isn't stressed by it all. Not quite sure what I would do with that diagnosis mind so have to wait .......... I don't like not knowing what is wrong!

I am going to sound awful but nope, Brice has had no anti-flea etc treatment for about 2 yrs and then it was a one off for a specific issue, I don't like over-using chemicals and I have more issues with ticks than fleas so easier to monitor. The puppies and older gundog are treated with Spot-On but Brice has no access to them until the areas are dry and tbh he is not likely to want to wash the rug rats anyway .

I am very careful about the cleaners I use around the house equally so he is unlikely to have had much chemical exposure.

He has almost finished his course of Cartrophen injections and is starting to be less keen about going to the vet, don't think he will want to be left on Wednesday but it is something I feel I need to know one way or the other, I have another dog going in on the same day so at least he won't feel it is only him!

Thanks for the link to the article, I hadn't read that particular one but it echoed similar causes and treatment options.

Poor lad is marginally patchwork with the shaving he had! After all he has a whopping bladder stone , it wasn't seen on first scan as his bladder wasn't full enough and apparently it is huge! In addition they found a fluid sac on his prostate and a 'lesion' on one testicle so we have only one option. The stone has to come out surgically and while that happens he will be castrated which will deal with the 'lesion' which will be sent for cytology and obviously with no testosterone (or limited) the hope is his prostate will settle.
He is having surgery at the end of the month (unless he has issues weeing beforehand) as I had leave from work already booked. All I hope is my floozy of a pup decides to come into season now or waits for him to feel up to coping with her. She is 8 months old and is showing all the behaviour signs without the physical .

At least you know what has been causing the problem which is a relief! Good luck for Brices operation - I am sure he will be ok

Re:Any Ideas? 1 year, 4 months ago #28013

Yes, good luck with Brice's operation and as Houndy said, at least you have an answer and do not be hard on yourself for not de fealing, not sure what others do, but I never have used flea treatments, my dogs have never had them. They are washed in anti flea shampoo about 2-3 times a year. I do know when my Mum goes to the vets for wormers, they charge her £30-£40 and make her have Flea drops or whatever they are. They never ask me because I ring up and just ask for Millebemax.

Do others deflea?

Good to hear that a cause has been found for Brice's discomfort...I wish him all the best..(and you too)
What kind of lesion does he have..and does it neccesatate castation?
Amazing what vets can miss...ours missed a foal in the womb..complete with heartbeat...D'OH!!

Re:Any Ideas? 1 year, 4 months ago #28304

I hope the surgery goes well. I was going to suggest contacting Kaycee as her boy Tags has had an ordeal with renal issues.

I hope surgery goes well for Brice and that he makes a speedy recovery. It's always worrying when a dog has a health problem. At least you know the problem and have a solution in hand.

I deflea Ben. I used to only do it very occasionally but since he developed the bacterial skin infection last year that the vet said was probably caused by fleas I do it every 3 months now.

Brice went for his surgery early this morning and I am pleased to report that all has gone ok although it took longer than expected, he is minus stones, testicles and scrotum as the vet felt as a six year old well endowed male it better to take it all rather than let the skin sac regress. He is staying with the vet till tomorrow on a drip as he does have times when he drops his pulse rate alarmingly and the vet wants to know he is stable before he comes home (even though he does this at home too and it is an electrical issue). I was impressed when they discussed his meals before I could ask as he is somewhat grain intolerant so he is having chicken for supper if he is up for it

My brittany boy is missing him terribly while my puppy girls are enjoying getting on the sofa. The brit pup is missing him a bit as she loves him while the cocker is just enjoying not being sat on!!!!!
