TOPIC: Sick

Sick 3 years, 5 months ago #3013

I would like to know how often other peoples hounds are sick.

At least once or twice a week there is a pile of bile on my hall floor (thank heavens for wooden floors!)
Friday night, arrived home from supermarket, laden with bags, trod in a sicky pile! Yesterday, sick next to the back door, heard him but couldn't get there in time. He may go another coupe of weeks, then he does it again.
I am pretty sure it isnt medical and I know dogs often eat grass and clear themselves out, but it is bought to my attention before as Murphy lives indoors as the others were always in kennels.
I am not sure he has actually eaten any grass lately either.

He must know by now, I am not a sick person, pooh I can deal with, but sick????

Mac brings up the occasional clear watery bile.
It seemed to me like he'd been gulping too much air with his water and brought a bit back up when he burped. On average he probably does it about once maybe twice a month.

Ben brings up clear bile approx once a month as well, sometimes he's been eating grass but not always. I've noticed that he also does it when he's not has anything to eat for quite a while.

lana my dh occasionally sicks up a bit green bile but med my cross terrier regularly does it usually when she knows the postie is on her way she gets over excited barks a lot then often sicks up bile as you say thank goodness for wood flooring, if i am in and quick enough I keep her away from the door spoils her fun no doubt but saves a mess.

Does he cough first thing in the morning? He might have reflux. Bree and Lockie graze on grass all the time everyday, and they don't bring up bile very often. Maybe once a month...

Murray is sick about once a fortnight and it is usually all his supper bought back as it went down:ohmy: Trouble is - I haven't yet got wooden floors (new years resolution!) and try stopping 4 other dogs from gobbling it up!! Must be extra nice when still warm lol.
The reason he is sick is simple - he is a greedy git!

Some years ago, my dogs had the same problem now and then, it was always in the morning.
I solved the problem by givin them a dry bisquit or two (digestive) just before bedtime. An empty stomach sometimes produces too much acid, then they eat grass etc.

This is exactly what I'd do and what my vet recommends, some coockies or dry bred to be fed before the real food comes with a dog , who barfs up is meal regulary or bile - when they get too hugry the acids will " overflow " and they barf bile - or their food initially . My vet also suggested - and does so herself , she has a whole bunch of greyhounds - to add a little bit of baking soda to their food , this neutralises the acid . Racing Greys get this regularly . One of my girls gets it daily , the others every 2nd day , about 1/4 of a teaspoon or so .

I wish my vet had told me that, instead I had to fork out for pills. For 5 days, everymorning Lockie would be coughing and retching. So on the 5th day I took him to the vet where he said it sounded very much like reflux. He said that it can be quite common in deep xhested dogs. Anyway so I buy the tablets and the next morning he stops and hasn't done it since.

At the top of this post I said "pooh I can deal with, but not sick"

I will now change that. Murphy was poorly in the night, and had the runs, huge massive runs, all over the hall floor (wooden:cheer: )

My son woke me this morning to say "Your dog has pooh'd" funny how he is my dog whenever he has done something!

After gathering my thoughts, I rolled over and said to my husband, "your turn to make the tea" how cunning is that. Anyhow, we both got up and dealt with it, ALL OF IT! We took him out for an hour or so and got back a little while ago, while we were out, he did hard pooh's and had an unusually long run around with his ball. When we got back he was trembling all oer, so perhaps he might hae a bug:(
Though he did help himself to several mince pies yesterday and has eaten lots of leftover Xmas dinners.

Hopefully he will be better tomorrow, I might just give him dry food tonight, if any at all, see how he goes.

Poor Murphy - hope he is better soon

Poor you having to clean up poo. I remember when Murray was going through his very loose stage (bowels from hell)and he had an accident in the front room - and that was on carpet!!

Poor Murphy, I hope he is feeling better. Lucky it was on wooden floors. Many years ago Dana had rotten runs and it was on lovely apricoty carpet. We never could get the stain out properly and had to hide it with furniture.
The shaking mat have been caused from dehydration and muscle fatigue.
