Hi
Our 6 month old deerhound puppy has had to have half of her tail amputated due to a nasty accident. Has anyone else had a similar experience and if so is there anything that we should watch out for?

Re:Tail accident 3 years, 11 months ago #469

Ouch, how did she manage that? What a shame, their tails are a feature, not having experience of a tail injury I can offer no advice? I would have thought it would heal nicely though. Poor puppy, extra tickles and Schmacko's!

Unfortunately our 4 year old son shut her wonderfully long tail in a door. It was only the tip, bottom 2 inches or so that was cut to the bone, but a week later still wasn't healing and she was very distressed, so the amputation.
However she has been very good about it all, even with her head in the classic 'bucket' collar!
At least she can still wag the bit that is left!

Oh poor thing, poor kiddie too, he/she must have felt awful. Accidents happen and Deerhounds are always in the way!! Mine do get trod, the Border Terrier trips us up.

Ouch! Sorry to hear about that "tale". I haven't had any tail accidents but I have heard they can be slow to heal sometimes. Wishing your pup a speedy recovery.
BTW you need to be careful about them hitting the end on walls and such when wagging as that can reopen the wound while it is healing

That's ben a concern of mine ever a friend's derrie caught hertail in a door. About an inch and a half had to be amputated. It took quite a while to heal as the wound did want to close up. I can't recall what steps she took to promote the healing process, but I'll check and post it when I find out.

Good luck with your wee'un.

Poor thing,

I know Deerhounds, Great danes etc etc are prone to tail injurys

A good idea is to use micropore and attach a syringe case to the end of the tail whilst healing so it does not get further damage, changing it daily and making sure the micropore etc is not too tight

Glad all is working out ok know, It does make me think of the stupid governement and the ban on Tail docks for other breeds of dogs,am sure tail injurys are going to go up

But then the vets will like that all more money for them, can you post a pic
sendin hugs
and pats

Hi
Just to let you all know Clunie was discharged by the Vet last week, when the stitches came out. She had her first proper run with our other dogs on Wednesday evening, up in the forest at the back of our house. She'd a great time with no nasty incidents, so fingers crossed.
Thanks
Vicky

Hi
I'm really sorry to hear about your pup's accident. We also had a Deerhound which had to have her tail amputated. The Deerhound was Ardkinglas Pattie (or Beaulah) and she was run over by by lorry. She went under the lorry and amazingly only her tail was caught by the wheels. However, the tail was badly damaged and needed amputated an inch from the base. Beaulah made a quick recovery and never had any subsequent problems with her tail. Hair quickly grew over the end once her stiches were out. The only issue was her balance and turning ability at speed. We hadn't realised till then how much deerhounds use their tail to help them stop and turn. However, she quickly adapted. We never actually showed Beaulah as she was at the time purely a pet. The accident though, which was my fault, spurred my Mum to breed from her as she was shaken by the thought of losing her. So the tail accident turned out positively in the end with Beulah then becoming the foundation bitch of the Cusidh line. I've attached a photo of Beaulah with her pups.

You will be allowed to show Clunie and when the judge goes over your dog indvidually when they normally ask about the dogs age etc I would use that opportunity to explain quickly to the judge what happened about Clunie's tail.

Good luck with the showing.

what a gorgeous photo, she looks so proud of her brood!

Glad to hear Clunie is on the mend, hopefully only losing the end bit and being young, it won't affect her balance too much!

That is a lovely photo. She looks like the proud regal Mum with her offspring.
So glad Clunie is coming along well.

Glad to say that Clunie is now well on the way to recovery. She has been chasing Fynn along the forest tracks on the hill at the back of our house. Her balance doesn't seem to be affected, and she's really just back to her happy self.
