Verenav
I am interested in "Tellington touch" after seeing a video used some of the massage ideas on my 21 year old cat in the last months of his life with great success. For his whole life he would not go on anyone's lap but when I started giving him the gentle massage I could lay him sideways on my lap.
My dh Cailean is nervous about other people touching her and completely panics if anyone tries to cut her nails. A very stupid vet tech tried to lay her down & force her, then gave up when the dog bit her own tongue. I've given up entirely. Fortunately she wears them down successfully with her propensity to be extremely active. Do you think there is tt methods to help with this problem? This nervousness is also why I have given up any idea of showing her.
I did not know there was TT techniques to deal with behaviour. Can you suggest a resource or book? I just googled and found TTouch.com will go there first. I will appreciate any info.

With TTouch its better to get someone to teach you how to do it,
i havent used TTouch, but a friend of mine has used the Anxiety wrap, and it did help her deaf collie, it helped carm and relax her, as she used to get stressed out verry easaly, from what ive read it can help with nervousness,

www.paw-rescue.org/PAW/PE...ogTip_touch.php
Body wraps to help shy and fearful dogs:

A light elastic body-wrap can be placed on the dog to increase body awareness, stimulate seldom-used neural pathways and facilitate new ways of responding.

Wearing a snug body wrap helps dogs become more aware of how their bodies move and can boost their confidence. TTouch practitioners frequently make use of these wraps, anchoring them around the chest, wrapped around the trunk, and encompassing the hindquarters.

You can use ace bandages or strips of cloth to form body wraps. Wearing a body wrap for an hour can calm a dog and even build his confidence when encountering new people or environments. Body wraps have also been successfully used to reduce fear of thunderstorms.

Ready-made body wraps are available, such as the Anxiety Wrap Anxiety Wrap created by Susan Sharpe, a certified TTouch practitioner. It employs maintained pressure to calm the animal, thus enabling you to redirect her focus to you.

with the paws - i would take it slowly, start by when shes relaxed do some stroking down her legs, take your cue from her - if she starts to get unsettled, stop and give her a treat and then carry on another time, keep doing this till shes staying relaxed, then move on to her paws and repet, once shes happy with you touching her paws, get the clippers out, but just have them near you, and start stroking her paws - do everything like its no big deal, once shes happy - touch her claws with the clippers - again till shes happy, then try and clip one (only the tip), you will have to take it slowly, you could also teach her to give a paw, it will teach her theres nothing to worry about, when she gives it you, and only good things will happen.

Jane thank you so much. I will read all of the links you sent. I have looked on-line for the closest tt practitioner. I hope to work through this nervousness before trying to take Cailean lure coursing. Thank you. Barb

Hi there , sorry , I haven't been on this site for a while . When you google www.ttouch.ca you will find our main website here in Canada . You can search for practitioners near you or perhaps even a workshop will be offered ( we usually bring our dogs to the trainings and workshops ) . I have been involved for 8years or so now and though I haven't done that much yet , I have seen " miracles happen " again and again . I use Ttouch in my work at the SPCA and also have private clients , will start giving workshops next week . All my dhs have had it and all love it , my cats do , too. Hope you find someone near you who can personally introduce you to Ttouch - there are plenty of books and videos out there , they should also be on the website.

Good luck with helping Cailean ! If you have more questions and I do not answer , please do contact me privately - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it - I do not always have the time to check in here .
