My deerhound cross, Alfie has a dense undercoat, especially on his outer thighs. In this hot weather it must be insulating him something awful.

We are not experienced shaggy dog owners so I was hoping somebody might be able to help.

Should I just persevere with the slicker and brush or is there some wonder tool out there that will get rid of this fleecy undercoat?

Thanks in advance

A Coat King might do the trick. It's a combination of razor and rake and really gets through a coat. Get the coarse one. I think Pets At Home stocks them.

However, unless he's clearly distressed by the heat, the insulating effect might actually be keeping him cool, so you don't want to go mad with the Coat King if and when you get one.

Thanks Sid,

I'll have a look for one.

He is panting, but no more than his smooth coated companions. I guess it just looks as though it might be uncomfortable because of the way the undercoat has fleeced together on his thighs. The fur there seems different to that on the rest of his body. More fluffy.

In my ignorance I was wondering if this could be from his cross or if it's from the deerhound side of his breeding?
