TOPIC: The Scott Monument

The Scott Monument 1 year, 9 months ago #27174

I had Bryn and Cara in Edinburgh today, raising funds for the Scottish Greyhound Sanctuary. We parked at the Cowgate and walked down to Princes Street Gardens, where we met some Greyhounds and their people and set about parting tourists from their dosh.
It wasn't easy to find the greyhound folk, because of the crowds and as I was walking past the Scott Monument I was mobbed by a bus load of Japanese tourists. They were pointing at the dogs and then the monument saying "Same dog, same dog?" A lovely little girl who spoke perfect english was very excited and was telling me all about the monument and the dog, she was delighted to get her photo taken holding Cara. An American said the dog on the monument looked bigger than Cara, the little girl rolled her eyes and said "Of course it looks bigger, look at the size of the man on the monument, they're bigger than life size" kids can get away with anything

Even with all the madness that is Edinburgh during the festival, Cara is completely un fazed, she only showed unhealthy interest in a guy dressed as a chicken. Folk on stilts riding unicycles while juggling fire didn't get a second look from her. Bryn was a bit feart of the puppeteer with the wooden dog that followed him up the mound

What with all the traveller types attracted by the Fringe Festival...I hope you had them on bits of string...

Oh Oh, am I fundraising today

Please give me a hint HB, I thought I had a selfish day ahead of me

The SGS folk are there again today, with different folk, I don't envy them with all the dogooders giving it "It's cruel to have those poor dogs out in the sun, with all these crowds" It was cloudy when I was there and I still got the evil eye from one daft bat.

Do they think the working dogs only go out in perfect conditions?

Imagine a collie that couldn't work if it was too hot or too cold.

It's common sense not to work a dog hard in hot weather, but letting it lay down in the sun (or shade) with fresh water and loads of folk petting them, is hardly hard work.

Another amusing snippet from yesterday.

Guy in football strip was telling an American that my dogs were hunting dogs, "That's right hen, init" he says. I agree that lurchers are indeed hunting dogs, but also make great pets. I was talking to someone else but overheard him go on to tell the American that the Scots trained them to bring down stuff but not kill it as the men would finish the job. "What did they hunt?" asks the American. "The Eglish" replies the Scot "These dogs can tell an English man fi a Scot by their smell" Oh how the chap laughed when the American looked stunned.

Watchout at the next meet HB

Hello hairybeasty,

HB, you are not Scottish? You are a Pict?

Poor Hairybeasty's not a native Scot, Joerg, but we're planning to nationalise him if he keeps this up.

Oh is that why my DH Ben kept trying to bring me down when I ran with him when he was a pup!

Well a few venison sausages and he was mine. Last time we bumped into a Scottish person it was lucky he was on-lead and I could pull him away quick as he was about to wee up his leg.
