Just out of interest, I used to walk past fletton towers, peterborough, to my grans house, in woodston, sometimes the hounds were out, and used to run along the fence with me, they were so quiet, just bouncing along, I think thats where my love for deer hounds was kindled, it has taken me many years to realise my dream of owning one, I never realised just how famous these hounds were until now! I never saw the lady, Miss Hartley, was she of Hartley jam fame?? regards, pat - and grace!

There was an interesting article on Miss Hartley in the last Deerhound mag, perhaps you could get hold of a copy, I think you would enjoy it.

It's in the latest edition of the UK Deerhound Club mag, maybe someone can scan the article and email it to you, I don't have a scanner at present but could possibly scan it later this week when I go somewhere that has one.

Fletton was the home of Miss Norah Hartley Rotherwood Deerhounds some of the finest deerhounds bred.
Fletton itself was an amazing house, I remember fondly arriving there, looking up to the top and seeing the wonderful Deerhound Weather vane that was on the roof.
And then the delight of tea from a lovely rosewood box being served with scrummy cakes from a cake stand, and of course plenty of chat with Miss Hartley, whilst dear Chad was lying at her feet and seeing Sheila who was wonderful she looked after the hounds and they adored her, Sheila always called Miss Hartley Miss Nora.
The kennel block was the original stable block for the house with the most ornate features , Miss Hartley used to go into the block in the evenings and say in her unique voice
" who's turn is it tonight", every evening one of the hounds came into the house to stay with her, and I was told that when the housekeeper was on day off quite a few sneaked in.
Miss Hartley's father was the " London Brick Company"
I still have the Sothebys auction catalogue here, I could not face going to the sale, but there is a fantastic photo of Fletton in its prime on the front. if anyone is interested I will try and dig it out.

I believe that the book is fetching quite a bit of money now. I will have to save up as I would love to have a copy.

The Deerhound Club still sells Miss Hartley's book at a very reasonable price, Houndy - you don't have to pay a fortune for it. Check out the Club website or PM me for details.

yep, there have been second hand coppies sold on sites for five times the amount the Deerhound Club sell them for. Also seen coppies for £30-£40 at dog shows

Thanks Sid. I have seen them on Amazon for 50 - 60 pounds and there was one in America for 250 pounds.

No that was a book called"Fly Fishing" by J R Hartley and book shops were swamped with requests after ad for same book. So much so that some bright spark actually made one!! Are deerhounds any good as fish bait?
