You are not allowed to show woollies. I lost my woolley Marti at christmas - she was a rehome who had advanced kidney disease and she was lovely with a beautiful temperement. I would have another woolie in a flash

The reason woolies are frowned on is because the coat is wrong for hunting in the type of country Deerhounds are meant to hunt in. I've never owned one, but apparently the coat mats easily and requires a lot of grooming, which wouldn't have been very practical hundreds of years ago in the Scottish Highlands. We have to remember that the people who wrote the standard had worked Deerhounds in the highlands and if they frowned on something there was probably a good reason for it.

Pam - you are right about the coat being hard work - it does matt easily especially when wet! Also their feet are very hairy so special attention is needed to keep the fur between the toes short

Bryer doesn't look like a Wooley, it might just be the photograph. I think Woolies looks so appealing and it wouldn't bother me owning one either, I am smitten with them.

I asked the same question a few months back too!

Forgot to say welcome Paul to the site. Bryer and Murphy my DH share the same father, Nimrod.

Hello and welcome Paul,

Very nice picture.

The most important thing is a sweet dog.

Best regards
