Top Lure Coursing Deerhound 2009 - BFSA 6 Months, 1 Week ago
|
|
I know we're blowing our own trumpet, but the desire to show off has overcome us!
Our Fergal (Sorisdale MacManus) has just been declared the top lure coursing deerhound of last year at the BSFA (British Sighthound Field Association) meetings.
Fergal is as thick as a plank and has the brain capacity of a goldfish, but he adores everybody and he lives to chase. We love him and I think you can safely assume we're very proud of him and quite chuffed.
End of trumpet blowing.

Many congratulations to you and Fergal
Your description of Fergal could be that of Murray but it makes us love them even more

BTW this is the sort of scheme that I was banging on about in the "working ability" thread that should be implemented to show the breed was "fit for purpose" in the eyes of the public...

The club do run an event in September at Lodge Park in Gloucestershire, which is run on National Land and is open to the public. This is a knock out competition between pairs of dogs (Fergal got to the semis last year). There may be some pics on the club website.

I wish. We practice on a field with a little machine we've knocked up but the events are near Newbury in Berkshire. There's nothing in Hertfordshire, no shows, no coursing, no nothing!

Glad to hear this info.In my humble opinion it should get more "headline" as the breeding of pedigree dogs debate rages behind the scenes where we cant influence the findings...

It would be fantastic if Lure Coursing could be run at the breed shows. However, you do need a rather large open space, that [u]must[u]be secure. There are not many places where you can get 100 odd rooms plus dining for 200, at a reasonable cost. Then you need lure drivers and all the rest, so I can see why it's not.

Crikey that sounds complicated!!
I was thinking more of regional one day events with a burger van followed by some national events with 20-30 finalists also with burger van or a hog-roast.
Have you had to travel loads to participate in this event or has it been fairly local?
I mean well done that is an amazing acheivement and one that the rest of us can only dream of, but how easy (apart from the running) do the powers that be make it for those who enter?..

It's good to see fit dogs run, I don't know why there are not more events.
I'm rather fond of the burger van/hog-roast idea:-)
