Last weekend we had a very special coursing at our club. Once a year, somewhere near the longest day, we have a'"star-weekend". In the afternoon you can have your dog judged (no prices or anything) and then in the evening/night there is a coursing.
Our coursing club co-owns a large field together with an iceskating club. The iceskating club uses it (when there is ice) in the winter, we use the field from april till october. And one time a year the city council alows us to put on the lanterns to light the field. Starting at 19.00 hours, the dogs have their first course, usually in pairs. Then at 23.00 hours the lights are switched on and we start the second course. Dogs run solo this time, to avoid accidents in the dark. It is great to see how surprised the dogs look to see the lure in the (half)dark and how well they run.
Weather was very beautifull and we saw a lot of nice courses from all kind of sighthounds and (non) sighthounds. Since Jan was operating the lure and I took care of the dogs we had no time to take pictures. But some other people did and as soon as I can I will send you some pictures.
We stayed overnight in our tent, so all in all we had a great weekend with good opportunity for Duncan to run.
Bye, Joke

Joke, perhaps I shouldn't interrupt your line, but I suspect we would all find it interesting to learn something about Nienoord's history, and lure coursing in Holland

Thank you Richard, for giving me something to do...
I would be very pleased to tell more about coursing in Holland and especially Nienoord, since this is our "coursing-home".
A bit busy now, but definitely something for the upcoming months to do.
Remind me about it if it takes too long...
Greetings from us all,
Joke

I'm sorry Joke Didn't want to chase you up!
There is a wealth of live and lure coursing history in The Netherlands that most subscribers to this forum will not know of.
For instance, just to stick to modern Deerhound (lure) coursing in Holland, I have an intriguing photo of a small bronze sculpture, of a hand-driven lure wheel, embedded in a granite cobble stone that was taken from the heart of Nienoord town one festive night:)
Now, I wonder what that signifies? Richard

To my surprise I managed to find it.
The base of the sculpted hand wheel is a cobblestone from Nienoord.
Nienoord being the cultural centre of lure coursing in Holland.
The trophy itself is for the "Deerhound Club Coursing Champion".
The name plates modelled on the same for the Waterloo Cup. Bit "clunky" though.
My guess is that it's gathering dust in a box. Aye, there's the rub - to course or not to course.

We were very thrilled when this trophy was made. Such a nice thing for a deerhound to win!
But I guess that (unfortunately) Richard is right: it is somewhere (nobody knows where)under the dust. What a pity. It had it all: Nienoord history, deerhound history, a purpose for deerhound owners in the netherlands to get a very special award.
As you read, not too much interest in the netherlands in coursing. And, because of that, no interest in winning this throphee.
Anywaym a price is 1 thing, having fun with your (hopefully coursing) deerhound, another. So lets just hope that interest in coursing with DH's does not stop.
Bye,
Joke

I will always be so grateful to you Joke when, feeling a little insecure, I asked your opinion on putting the third item, as it was then, at the head of the Championship Mission Statement (so to speak ) and you encouraged it emphatically. So it happened.
Aim of the Championship "(1) To give pleasure to the Deerhounds" etc. etc. At least, as I remember it. It was twenty years ago
"To give pleasure to the dogs" - Couldn't be better!
As far as I know, the trophy & box, with paper work, are in the care of Caroline van Zanten, centre here holding one of her Deerhounds smiling at her husband Simon, the crowned head, always the soul of the party.

Next year the European Championship for lure coursing will be held in Oirschot, Holland.
Not too difficult for UK sighthounders to visit, either as tourists, or as participants.
Time for the BSFA(?) to think of some sort of affiliation with the FCI, as participants need to show some sort of regonised licensing for competing hounds.

Thanks Richard for posting those - the 2nd one/Hoisdorf was taken by a friend of mina , the dhs feature are 2 siblings of my wee Hermione ( Caoinlan C litter ) - Hoisdorf , they say , is as much about good , home made food/potluck as it is about fun for the dogs , no championship points involved , a " family affair " . Too bad Germany is a bit far away these days , would love to go to this event ...
When was the finnish video taken , and , do you know who the dhs are ?

Joerg,
Thank you for your prompt and complete response!
Richard
Eva,
We have a daily Google Alert for "Deerhound", which provided the link to the Finnish lure coursing.
