I live in the UK and was recently teaching at the NATO School in Bavaria for a couple of weeks. As the coursing championship was on one of the weekends and I was staying over, I was invited by May-Britt, Birog, and family to a terrific (if wet!) weekend of coursing, deerhounds, and fantastic German hospitality. It was great to see so many deerhounds (and afghans, greyhounds, a whippet and a couple of borzoi's) all in one place. The atmosphere at the coursing was so amiable it almost seemed like a play group for dogs rather than a competition! The cafe floor was littered with steaming dogs while we all drank hot coffee, chatting as we tried to dry out.
On Sunday I was treated to a long walk in the countryside with three deerhounds followed by a traditional sunday lunch made by May-Britt's parents. With the hounds taking turns on the couch to keep an eye on us, we at home made noodles, roast, veggies, mmmmm...I think it took me a week to be hungry again!
(half hour later.... I've been trying to upload pictures but I don't seem to be as smart as this program
there must be a better way or I'm not doing it right!!)
It was a great weekend. Huge thanks to May-Britt and family for taking me in and making me feel like family. Now, if I can just make it back in January for the snow coursing....!!!
The last pic was the view out my window from where I was teaching. Tough job this, teaching in Bavaria during Octoberfest, eating all that good food, drinking that bier, playing with doogs, but darn it, somebody has to do it, so it might as well be me!
