How about this for an idea- just for fun.
We could have a worldwide virtual show. We'd need a selection of judges (preferably from around the globe). People submit photo's of their dogs maybe certain parts in detail. Text describing the dogs age weight etc.
I don't think we could really expect people to video dogs for movement - is it worth having a show if you can't see movement?

We could have different classes just like in a real show.

I don't know enough about showing to know if it is really possible to judge a dog from photos alone.

Any thoughts?
Rob

As it's just a bit of fun, I don't think it matters too much, and it's got to be easier than doing virtual coursing! Lets give it a go.

Sounds like a great idea, in Aus you don't really get any feedback from the judges, so it would be great if they could give a little run down of the good and bad points on each dog. I know it would only be one persons opinion but it would be very helpful for beginers like me

Video's might be a bit difficult, but photos from a few angles would be easy for most people - maybe top, front, side and back??

It's all about fun, lts do it! Looking at my boy at the moment, lets do a scruffiest hound - he'd win!!

I'm all for it. There's only one thing that might be a problem though, the weight. I can't lift Orrin to get her on the scales and I think both me and Orrin on them might break them. How do I weigh her?

Re:Virtual Show 3 years, 8 months ago #1473

My husband weighs himself, then picks Murphy up (picture veins popping out of his head!) and adds it together, I do it the easier way, pop him in the vets and they weigh them for free! Well ours do!

That's how we weigh the puppies but I don't think we would manage to lift Orrin.

The vets would definitely have scales and I'm sure they wouldn't be adverse to you popping in and using them. One of the dog food stands at a show last weekend had some where you could get a free weigh in. I couldn't imagine trying to pick our guys up and balance on the bathroom scales

Shall we start with a list of classes ? It's been a long time since I ever looked at show programme, what are they : puppy, novice, graduate, post-grad, open , veteran ??? Can't remember the rules any more.

Maybe we should have a cut down version, otherwise we might only get one dog per class. still everyone wins!
A new forum and sub forum for each class
We can have a different thread for each dog. the 'handler' submits the photos to their thread.
then the judges look at them all by a certain date and pick a winner from each class.

We have somewhere in our shed a gadget for weighing hounds, though it was for the Lurchers and Greyhounds and may not go up to a Deerhounds weight, but it is an idea if anyone is a bit handy.
It was a hammock/bag type thing, with a hook attached to scales that we hooked up to the shed ceiling. I can still picture our dogs being suspended from the ceiling in their little bags being weighed, then again you would still have to lift a Deerhound off the floor to suspend him, knowing my luck it would pull the roof down!!

This idea of a virtual show sounds brilliant! I must admit that I am glad that Clunie is not fully grown - at least either Allan or I should be able to lift her at a push still, to weigh her!
Count me in, it all sounds fun!

You might have to translate the classes for us Aussies.
We have:
Baby puppy (3-6months)
minor puppy (6-9months)
puppy (6-12months)
Junior (12-18months)
intermediate (18-36months)
open (6months+)
Veteran (at the discression of the organisers)

I'm not sure which ones your classes correspond to?
