Hello from Lincolnshire 3 years, 9 months ago #1072

hello everyone, I'm Liz and I hail from sunny (or not) North lincolnshire

Myself and Simon my husband share our home with 4 Deerhounds and a Lurcher. Also 2 cats who spend most of their time upstairs leaving cat hairs everywhere

we had our firts litter of deerhound pups last year, hence my username (well if hubby ever decides to post he'll feel a bit silly posting under "Liz" lol

am sure I will be able to dig some photos out soon, and I look forward to chatting among like-minded people!!

ta-ra for now

Hi Liz, welcome to the forum. What is it about Lincolnshire and Deerhounds. My dog Macleod came from Sleaford and I know there are several other breeders in that area. Is it because there's lots of flat open land for them to run around ?

Look forward to seeing those pics and to chatting with you.

CiCoch.

Re:Hello from Lincolnshire 3 years, 9 months ago #1076

oooh I don't know about lots of breeders, I know of one lady literally a mile away from where I live, but Lincs is a huge county and I'm right up near the Humber Bridge!!

and I guess it is rather flat round here, lol

but if there are any other Deerie people near me please hollar so we can arrange a get-together!!

hi liz must be buzy in your house, i live in the Highlands all heather and hills not that many flat feilds, do you have big fields near you that you can use...sheona

Re:Hello from Lincolnshire 3 years, 9 months ago #1098

there are fields around me, but I don't use them, too many busy roads alongside...

someone at work has suggested an area I can let mine run, but it's visible, and you have to be so careful in this area as there are lots of reports about coursing etc, and I don't want my dogs seized!!!

I'm hoping to take some of mine racing, there's a venue in West Yorkshire I believe, and other sight hounds/lurchers go for a fun day out, I quite fancy that

I also need to find out about lure coursing, I'm just worried that mine would be so noughty and not come back and really show me up lol

There are a few whippet/greyhound racing/coursing venues "oop north" that cater for other breeds. When Mac was about 12 month old I looked into taking him lure coursing, but was sorely dissapointed at the lack of response I got from the different organisers , and at the time Mac did't travel to well, so there was no way he would have been in a fit state to run after travelling for 3 hours either north or south.

I would still like to take him, but these days I would be more worried about him not wanted to chase the lure because it wasn't alive and furry. He would probably chase the other dogs , but would never win because he would always be chasing from behind.

If you do manage to get to one of these events, please let us all know how you get on. Mac travels alot better these days , so we could go further afield. That's if I can afford the bloomin diesel !

Ill keep my ears/eyes open for some northern lure coursing, when Kelda stops being wonky anyway - though same as CiCoch.. flipping diesel costs!!!!!

Wonder if theres any decent greyhound tracks would let a group of deerhound peeps on.. i know some do for afghan racing...

Hi Liz, Welcome to the site. great photo's, there's only one (or more) thing missing from your photos in the garden though, HOLES! Have you trained your hounds not to dig?

I've come home from work today to find the puppies have tell tale mud on their noses and legs. I've no doubt I'll find the holes eventually though, when I fall down them.

Ah Sally, I guess we must be quite lucky as ours are not diggers

when Skoll was a pup he once dug up some hyacinths behind a shrub so he could bury a toy, but that was the only time...

the younger ones have only ever shown any inclination to dig when we purchased a dog pen and put it up outside the house, primarily to give the ickle pups somewhere safe to play (our garden is a work in progress lol) and we put the older dogs in there thinkin they would be safe etc, and Bea tried diggin her way out little monster!! I have some pics somewhere, will post later

Leah has been known to dig up grass roots to eat, but so far (touch wood) no major excavations lol

Hi Liz
You are just so lucky that they are not diggers!
Clunie and Fynn (our lurcher) seem to think that digging was made specially as a past time for them. At one stage earlier this year my Mum's garden resembled the Somme. Which was really bad news as she is such a keen gardener and proud of her garden. So major fencing and her garden is fine. We acquired some forestry deer fencing and have fenced in our flower 'beds' but Fynn enjoys jumping into them! The grass has turned to mud and is full of nasty craters - dangerous at night. So I can feel for Sally.

Re:Hello from Lincolnshire 3 years, 8 months ago #1363

well here's some pics of the dog-pen last summer that inspired Bea to dig lol

we have decided to pave the whole area now immediately outside the house, so if we need the pen again they won't be able to dig ha ha

They certainly don't like being kept away from their humans. Lockie howled most of the day as Terry was doing a lot of earth work and dealing with boulders he didn't want him getting hurt.
