Hi

I have been a Deerhound lover for many years, and yesterday picked up this lovely lady from rescue (she has come in from Ireland) she is about 5 and so far its all going good altho we are pretty convinced shes had a pretty rough deal as she is ever so worried by everything

So that brings our gang to 4
We have Paige the collie x who is 14
Bella Bedlington whippet 13months
Willow Bedlington Whippet 7 months
and now Teasel who is about 5 ish

She was listed as a Deerhound x but she seems very deerhoundy to me

Anyway whatever we adore her, shes such a cuddlemonster

Oh and im Claire and my other half is Paul and our challenge for the day is to bath a very stinky big hairy lady !!

Hi Claire

She does look very lovely as do the rest of the pack. Not sure if you should bath today as she may find it traumatic. Can you leave it a week until she settles in a bit more or is she just too stinky

Fantastic pictures. She does look very deerhoundy.

I really dont want to stress her, but we had a little brush earlier and she loved it, so i think an all over body scritch may go down well.

I think we will just take it very steady and if she looks at all worried, we'll just have to put up with the stink a bit longer

Ah bless her she must be enjoying all the attention. She must think she is in heaven with all her new friends and the affection.

You obviously know what you're doing. Can't wait to hear how she settles in.

Welcome!

And thankyou for taking this lovely Deerhound into your lives, Its very sad to me to hear she has had a rough time , I just cannot fathom why some human beings are so cruel

Please keep us updated of her progress if there is any thing we can do to help at all pls let me know

Did the Deerhound Club rescue find her for you all??

She looks so lovely and I am so happy she is now with you all, where she can have the life she deserves with all of your other lovely houndys.

I too would wait for a week until the scrub up, unless of course she has any " friends " on her

Aww what a lovely greeting from everyone

I have to say operation bath went ok, i thought i would just fill the paddling pool and see what she did and i went and sat in it and she ambled over and got in with me so we had a good old wash and scritch and i think i managed to hypnotise her with chin rubs as she nearly dozed off standing up lol!

And then we had a nice brush i had lots of head rubs on my bum! and removed some dreadlocks so she is looking much better, altho i have found more bald spots on her legs and elbows so shes got a few war wounds i think she must have been in a concrete yard or something

Im also trying to build her up a bit as her ribs are sticking out quite badley so shes on 3 meals a day of working museli she is very hungry

We found her on lurcher linkand pups needing homes, as i say shes down as being a deerhound x, but i pretty certain she could be a pure DH

No doubt i will bombard you with more pics later, we are rather proud of our girl now its cooled off a bit, we are off for a wander to show her off

I feed mine on mince that I cook up but Omega for working dogs, it is great for building them up. She may have bald spot due to laying on damp floors when in kennels or it may be hot spots, not sure why they get them but I used pur tea tree oil on them and they cleared up as he didn't like the taste of the TT oil.

Lovely pictures and one very lucky Deerhound. Hello from us and I,d be wary of the museli diet espeically if it has to be pre-soaked.

I'm with Glynis on this one - muesli diets are not ideal. If you've got a Costco near you, see if they carry Autarky. It's about £13 a bag and mylot do pretty well on it with some cooked mince mixed through it.

And welcome to the site from Sid and the Lyart hounds

Im guessing that DH's dont digest wheaty stuff very well, going on her rear end activity and the stench coming from it!

I am going to start her on the Autarky tomorrow with some mince to make it more interesting

I have no idea how much she weighs, I didnt want to take her straight to the vets in case it freaked her out, but i do know shes a bit of a toast rack at the mo

shes about 27" (measured whilst asleep lol!) What amounts is best to give her and how often to get her back to shape?

Im assuming that a 'normal' deerhound is along the lines of a greyhound where you should be able to feel there ribs but they shouldnt be really prominent?

Thanks again for all your help and nice comment, and sorry for the daft questions, i just want to make sure we are doing the right thing for our girl

Hi Claire and welcome to the site. You have a beautiful Deerhound and she looks pure to
me. I bet she loved her bath. I had to bath our rescued Deerhound the day after she
arrived. Her coat was filthy, smelly and very knotted. She really enjoyed having the
shampoo massaged into her coat. Amber was so relaxed she nearly fell over.
