TOPIC: Hello from rainy New Zealand!

Hello from rainy New Zealand! 2 years, 10 months ago #13256

Hi Guys
Been following the website for a while now,and my husband and I finally got our own deeries a couple of weeks ago. We were delighted to get Jacobite Rosashorn (Faye to her friends) from Pam and Dave Moffitt in Melbourne. She is a gorgeous 18 week old bundle of legs and tail, and our plans were to do a bit of showing, hunting etc with her until she matured and then to think about importing a dog from the UK as a mate. However as always fate stepped in and we were very lucky to be able to secure Mapleridge Jaguar (Jag) from Richard Kesper's Mapleridge kennels. So we have gone from 0 to 2 in the past fortnight. Both of them coped with the journey well and seem to be settling in to life on our wee farm, and to sharing a house with Sarah, our 3.5yo mermaid x dolphin daughter and Ella, our yearling daughter.
I'll attach some photos that I took today. If any one is interested, I'm Jenny, I breed and train horses and teach riding, and am from Scotland; husband is Paul, he's a NZer and a farrier, and as you can see from photos he looks like a d/h!!
Any tips for showing will be greatfully received as we will start showing in about a month, with NZ Nationals in October, and we haven't a clue. Hopefully it will be like showing horses......????

Hello and welcome to the site from a very rainy Weardale uk.I have just been for a walk in torrential rain,no sign of it easing so had to go,with my 3 DHs Megan,Jess and Foggy. At least I was the only mad person dogwalking and had the fields to ourselves. The river Wear that goes through our village normally at a sedate pace, and Jess loves to swim in,is a raging torrent this morning, higher than I've seen it and threatening to flood the caravan site.Sorry,I'm waffling!
Can't wait to see the photos of your bundles of joy!

Hi Jenny from Sid with Tavish, Dileas and DownJess in rainy East Lothian. My Mad Scientist is building a kayak in the garage. I think he'd be better starting on an ark.

Whereabouts in Scotland are you from?

From my limited experience I have noticed that people that show dogs with a horse showing background tend to do really well and seem to understand how to best show the features of their dogs in the best way. Hope the same applies to you Can't wait to hear how you get on.

From Sara & Dan (hubby), Lucy, Anna, Jack and Eric (children) and a menagerie of animals Mack and Daisy (deeries) and Rocky (yorkie pupster), Leo cat and at the moment hundreds of ants all named Trevor

Hello, gorgeous hounds you have there. I'm coming up to the Nationals so will have to find you and give Faye a cuddle! What part of NZ do you live in? I live in Dunedin, I don't have a Deerhound yet but I ran boarding kennels for nine years and look after a stunning girl there. I own Weimaraners and do breed shows/agility/obedience and field trials with them so if you need any advise, as it can be quite confusing when you first start showing, please don't hesitate to contact me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Hello and welcome from me , Verena , and my 4 deerhound girls , too ! And huge big congrats to have already 2 of them - it took me 4+ years to go from 0 to 4 ! Now I am addicted and wished I could have 5 .
We live in dry and hot ( southern ) BC , Canada , where just now wildfires have started again and smoke is everywhere and 17 000 people have been evacuated so far - we could use all the spare rain anyone can send here .

Enjoy your hounds and post some pics when you find the time ! Mine love to hunt ( 3 0f them that is ) , though they do it on their own , without any input from me .....

Thanks for your good wishes - summers are always " tricky " here and this one is expected to be a " really bad " one - had some huge fires 6 years ago , too. Lots of smoke coming through , 3 fires burning some 30 km away from us at the moment , the biggest has consumed about 850 hectares so far , burning in the wlderness on a mountainside , the 2 smaller ones are much more threatening as they burn on the dges of a smaller town and very close to a water reservoir.
Everyone seems to be doing a phenomenal job and holding together and helping out wherever they can - the firefighters in the air and on the ground outstanding .
We can only hope ,that the weather forecast is wrong - at the moment they say temps will go up to 37-38C again during the next few days , and , that the heatwave and draught will go right through September - which would be really bad news for the firefront .

I am from Edinburgh originally but lived all over when I was shepherding - Ayrshire for 3 years, Northumberland for 5 years, North Wales for 2 years, Milton Keynes ( for my sins) for 3 years. My wee sister lives in Dunbar, and I lived in Ormiston, east Lothian for a year back in 1991 now i think of it.

Hi jeana
Thanks for the tip re Arabian ponies, when I came to NZ I lived in Dunedin and worked at an arab horse stud with Bremervale Arabians as its foundation stock, so yup lots of experience with far too clever youngsters. I think we have 20 horses here at the moment ranging from 11hh Nellie Nelson to 17hh anglo-arab Marquis.

Thanks for all the lovely messages, and getting an idea of who'se who and where's where on the forums. Rain has finally stopped and that only means that the frosts will start gain. We live in Taupo, in the North Island next to a huge lake at quite an altitude so its always cold here - not like Scotland cold but NZ cold where its 2 layers of merinos and a fleecie on in the morning but by lunch time its down to one layer.
Anyway dogs are just lazing here by me. Jag decided to catch his tail last night and caused a mini vortex in the living room, whereby a parallel universe was shown briefly to me. In this other world, toddlers clear up after themselves, husbands help with house work, and laundry is always mysteriously done and folded.
Right better go and feed out.
