When my old lurcher died I couldn't find another one like him:( so my son bought me a Deerhound pup, no papers, but a fantastic dog, so who cares. Here is a photo of Cara, I checked there were some other non pedigree pups on here and so thought it would be ok to join in. Cara is 28" tall and very slim, built for speed me thinks:dry: I found this site through Lurcher Link, I have two dogs from them, Bella & Bess and I also kept one of Caras pups. I have regular contact with all her pups and have enjoyed watching their success at lurcher shows. I'll post more pix when I work out how to get more than one on at a time.

Hi feldandjack
Welcome to the site - of course you are welcome here, Thanks for the picture. If you post pictures using photobucket (as i think you did here) you should be able to add as many pictures as you like. If you make a mess it doesn't matter we can always tidy it up later. So just give it a go. If you are uploading your photo directly to the site using the 'select image to attach' bit at the bottom then you can only upload one image per post. Nothing to stop you posting several times though. Hope you enjoy the site, any problems or suggestion then please just let me know.
Thanks
Rob

Hi Feldandjack
Like you, I had a Lurcher 20 years ago, Deerhound/Greyhound/Collie mix (we think!) anyhow, turned out to be the best dog you could ever ask for, never a growl with the kids, kind and a demon hunter. We also had, Greyhounds which we raced with some sucess at Henlow, Beds. 5 years ago, we were down to the last grehound bitch, but at 12 she developed a tumour and was put to sleep. I always wanted another Lurcher, but as Meg didn't take to pups too well, held off. After she died I began to look for a nice Lurcer, but after visiting several litters, didn't like what I saw, I set to aims too high after our original boy, so ended up with a Deerhound. We absolutely adore him (though he is in trouble at the moment for emptying the contents of my bin up the garden)!!!
We have a go at the showing, have been lure coursing with him but he is a family pet first and foremost. Where did you buy your dog from and where abouts are you?

Hi
What a lovely dog Cara is - as is her pup. I've only tried a lurcher show once with Hettie. I'm afraid we were thrown out! I wasn't sure either of how to show her. It's quite different to showing deerhounds. Welcome to the site.
Here's a picture of Hettie relaxing. Her mother was a whippet x bedlington. Father was unknown.

That's because secretly we think Hettie has crossed the interspecies barrier and has more cat tendencies than dog! Please don't tell any dogs in the Milton Keynes area as she'll probably get bitten!

Welcome and what a lovely story and photos, what dog did you put Cara too??
Love of a sighthound is more important to me than any pedigree,
and they look very very happy

Thanks for the replies, Hettie looks lovely, I like her tail. Cara got together with a nice Greyhound/deerhound, he was 1" taller than her and a good match in build and temperament. Cara came from somewhere through the west of Scotland. Like Lurch8252 I saw some 'odd' looking Deerhound crosses while searching for a lurcher. I tried for a rescue dog but missed it and had almost given up when my son bought Cara.I love the Deerhound crosses, their character, temperament and size are just right for me. Although Cara was advertised as a Deerhound, she does not have the big build of the show dogs and she is very athletic. She is a pet first, but she does get to chase the bunnies. I love watching her at full speed, she is not a killer and lacks the 'bite' to make a poachers dog :laugh:She rounds the bunnies up and sends them towards you, I think she is some sort of pacifist hunter:blush:
I would like to have a go at Lure coursing with her, the only problem is she gets car sick, she loves to travel but after 20-30mins so I'm hoping to find something not too far away. Luckily Bryn did not inherit this problem, so I can travel further with him;)

It'll take Cara getting nipped by a squirrel and she will soon learn to bring you back a 'nin live' bunny.
Our Lurcher and our current Deerhound were both soft mouthed, but soon learnt how to do it properly!
There are plenty of small Deerhounds out there doing brilliantly at the shows, big is not always best. I've been to shows where the classes were mixed, both dog and bitches, and all the dogs were 'thrown out' as the judge liked the smaller bitches! I think Murphy is about 31", though haven't measured him for a couple of years, he isn't the biggest of dogs, there are puppies out there that are much bigger than him!
I think I am going to measure him now, out of curiosity.

Hi feldandjack
Welcome!Hope taht you enjoy this forum.
Like you and Lurch, we first of all had a gorgeous lurcher, whom many people were convinced was a baby deerhound. After we had to have her put down at just 7 years old, we ended up with another deerhound lurcher - this time male. He is lovely, but we decided that we also wanted a female deerhound and hence we got Clunie in January this year. They are a great pair, although I sometimes wonder as to who is the lurcher....
Fingal (lurcher) has decided that apart from cat food his favourite food to steal is butter/spread! Unfortunately he hasn't worked out that it makes him sick....At least Clunie just loves the cat food!
