TOPIC: lana my deerhound

lana my deerhound 3 years, 8 months ago #1761

Hi i own lana a ten and a half year old deerhound she belonged to my brother craig silcock who emigrated to australia last nov. He decided that lana was too old to go to australia the heat would not of been good for her and she would not be able to go to work wiyh hom every day like she did in the u.k. So i decided to give her a home with us she now lives happily with my old cross whippet/terrier lottie and meg our cross terrier it took a bit of getting used to 3 dogs but i have it of to a fine art now. Lana had originally belonged to a game-keeper and had worked till appox. 7 years of age although you would never no she has no interest in any small furys! perhaps she knows she is retired she is a very clean dog so loyal and faithfull, an absolute to joy i love her dearly. I hope she lives to be a ripe old age at present she is fit and well and loves to play and if she can she loves to try and climb on to my knee! quite difficult with long legs! She loves going out in the car and on the occasions she stays at home i often come home to find my slippers in her bed lovely and warm!

Hi Annette, welcome to the mad world of Deerhound owners. Where about in the UK do you live? That is a good age for Iana and so glad to hear she is still lively. How lucky is she to have you in her life! and the same for you, especially with those warm snug slippers (mine would be eaten!)
Can you post any photo's of her and do you know of her breeding?

Re:lana my deerhound 3 years, 8 months ago #1765

Lana sounds lovely, so nice the slippers are intact when you get home and not all chewed and slobbery.

Welcome Lana sounds lovely as do the others,
I think Craig did really the brave and right thing to do, that long flight would be horrible for her.

She sounds lovely and I can imagine her with your slippers, please do post some photos if you ahve them, and again welcome

Re:lana my deerhound 3 years, 7 months ago #1779

hi sorry about my spelling mistake it should of said shot

Re:lana my deerhound 3 years, 7 months ago #1780

Hi Annette - I put the spelling right, certainly made the story read a whole different way! Welcome to the forum by the way.
Just have a go at posing the pictures. if it doesn't work I can just delete the posts so you can have another go. Basically pictures should be as small as possible ideally no wider than 499 pixels. If that doesn't mean anything to you then just try anyway, if all else fails you can always email me the pictures and I'll post them for you.
Thanks
Rob

Hi Annette, So sorry to hear about shooting. I think I would have done something nasty to the game keeper if I had been there. Welcome to the forum.

Re:lana my deerhound 3 years, 7 months ago #1783

How awful about Ghillie, unfortunately, and if I am wrong, please someone put me right, but if a dog is off lead on someones land, then the landowner has a right to shoot the dog, no doubt he used to pretence that the hound was worrying his livestock. Still doesn't make it alright though for us Deerhound owners, he probably thought he was a Lurcher belonging to some 'undesirable'. That is the sad thing about owning, not just a Deerhound, but other sighthounds, you have to be so careful where you take them for walks. It has always been a worry of mine, not just about the dog being shot, but people thinking we are out hunting when infact we are out walking!
Sad story, the Gamekeeper in question was obviously not a dog lover, nor did he have a heart

I think thats a terrible thing that Ghillie got shot, I'd be devestated if that happened to Ben my dog.
My understanding of the law is that a dog can only be shot if it is or is about to attack livestock and not purely for trespass. I always worry terribly about this happening when I'm walking Ben and take great care and only let him off lead if I'm absolutely sure its safe to do so. I used to walk him over Cannock Chase but he started chasing Deer so I tend to stay clear of places with Deer or Sheep.

On several occasions when walking Ben on lead, on a public footpath, cattle have become very menacing and have tried to attack us but I bet that would be no excuse for shooting them.

Hi Annette and welcome. So sorry to hear about Ghillie. I must admit that it is always a worry for me with our deerhound and lurcher that they may be accussed of worrying livestock. We are lucky as where we live is in a forest park so ther are no sheep etc. However this makes it quite difficult when we visit relatives or friends as were are always on the lookout for livestock.
I know that friend of ours had a big Armenian sheepdog who got shot for killing sheep. He was such a gentle dog and our village was shocked - at least those none farmers of us. Always sad when those things happen.

That's why I never walk near cows! Horrible big things that have chased me in the past! I know they were only curious, but how annoying that I could see my house, yet daren't go that way to get in, I had to walk another 5 miles out of my way!!! Still gace my husband a laugh when I eventually got hom, all wet and tired!
On another occasion, through a chain link fence, my little Patterdale Terrier had a little sniff, only to be hoofed in the air, he lived to tell the tale!
If theirs cow pats in the field, I don't go in!

Hi to you all Craig was at work with the dogs he was a forestry worker working in a local wood that he only occasionaaly worked in both ghillie and lana were off leads lana always stayed close to craig but ghillie wondered a bit he was was emerging from the trees (walking) when he was shot the game keeper stated he thought the dog was on his own and wanted craig to move so he could shoot lana craig said he could dee ghillie on the ground this man would neither beleive that craig wes leagally at work or let him attentd to ghillie although caraig said he new the dog was dead. Craig would not let him near lana and eventually he let him put her in his truck, then craig phoned the police not that they have been any good. It was the saddest day of my life when i saw ghillie as i went with craig to the pet crematorium he was heart broken. The game keeper said he thought he was chasing deer the dog was walking and was shot with a high powered gun that you can only shoot still objects. Craig fought and fougt his case he has wvery bit of legislation ever wrote on the matter and a dog can not be shot for chasing wild deer (which he was not) Craig had many chacter witness from people in various woods from local down to yourkshire many of tjem land owners, farmers, forestry, and game keepers saying what fantastic dogs they were. Infact 2 weeks ago we took lana to see craigs friend a game keeper in yorkshire and visited the spot in the woods where he scstterd ghillies ashes. Craig never wnt back to the woods whwere ghillie was shot not even to collect his work tools myself and one of his friends went to collect them.

Re:lana my deerhound 3 years, 7 months ago #1813

Oh Annette, I have tears in my eyes reading your sad story about Ghillie, what an evil man, more like he was frightened of dogs himself and got a bit trigger happy. I can't believe the Police did nothing, a man walking around shooting animals in a public place, I mean, did he see a Deer running anywhere? I know no prosecution would have bought Ghillie back, but it would have been worth seeing this man loose his firearms licence and more importantly his job. To think he was going to shoot the other dog too. When you say he wouldnt let your brother tend to Ghillie, in what way? Did he appear threatening wih his gun? I hate stories of animals and children suffering.

Re:lana my deerhound 3 years, 7 months ago #1814

Hi Helen, my brother only maaged to prosecute this man in the small claims court although it was not compensation he wanted he at least wanted the mans gun licence to be taken from him so he could never do this again and yes he was very threating towards craig. Ghillie was shot on private land but Craig was working there legally, as you say nothing will bring Ghillie back buy this guy didn't even no what sort of dog he shot describing him as a lurcher type! Craig said even if he admitted he had made a mistake but the bottom line he shot the dog not knowing if any one else was about he could just of easily shot Craig, I am sure they are not susposed to shoot when forestry workers are about without knowing ther wereabouts
