My husband and I have had a 3yr old Scottish Deerhound for 3 months. We purchased him from SAFE - which saves animals from euthenasia, he is a lovely dog, but we do not know anyone else in the Universe with a deerhound. I am positive he is a purebreed as he looks and acts exactly as all info I have managed to source. He was abused/neglected?? by his previous owner, who apparently acquired him for hunting. When we got him he had just had an operation on his hind leg (steel plate) as it had been broken (not sure how). Does anyone know anyone in Western Australia with a deerhound. I have never seen another one and I do not know of any clubs here. We do not show him (obviously)but really enjoy being able to give him a good home and find him a loving friend.

Love to talk to anyone out there.

Sandra

Hi Sandra
What is his name? There are a few in WA that have Deerhounds. There is a woman in York called Adrienne and my Bree has a sister that lives there somewhere. Maybe Jacobite will let you know. My second Deerhound Dana came from Duranillan (sp) near William, from a breeder down there. I lived in Perth for around 20 years and moved back to Tassie 6 years ago.
I'm so glad you have taken this poor soul under your wing, they deserve the best. I would love to see some pics of him

Your poor boy, sounds like he had a rough life before landing on his feet with you guys. We're in Sydney but we did hear a few years ago of someone in WA with two rescue deerhounds they were trying to rehome so there are definitely some over there. You've come to the right place if you want to know other deerhound owners in this universe I warn you though.. you will soon become addicted and want another one, it is the inevitable fate of all deerhound owners!!

I second the picture request

I'm in Melbourne but I wish you all the best - I had a rescue deerhound myself years ago. Mine had been viciously abused too. Don't worry, they are very ACCOMMODATING dogs if you know what I mean - I knew absolutely nothing about dogs let alone deerhounds when I got my first - but it will be ok, he will just adapt to the way you do things.
There is probably a deerhound club in WA that you could join.

Re:New Owner 4 years ago #232

There is only one Deerhound Club and that is the Deerhound Club of Victoria. It is worth joining if you are interested in the breed. The quarterly Magazine has some great articles and the show results are published, breeders and litters are advertised and letters are sent in from various members.

What a brilliant idea for owners of such special, bur rare dogs. .The chances of meeting other owners are so small; I have only done so once, since Isla came into our lives over 2 years ago and that was at the game fair at Bodelwyddan Castle. Before that it was about 1990 when I last saw one.
Isla was bred for hunting, her mother being from a coyote hunting kennel and is the most intelligent, keen and willfully independent dog I have ever had. At about 11 weeks old I was playing with her and ball, which rolled under a car. She made to where the ball went under, took stock and walked around the car and waited for it to come out. I then realised she was going to be no ordinary dog. When she chases cats, I have seen her deviate from a direct chase to cut the cat off from where she thinks it is going to go. For a time I assumed that the reason people thought they were dim dogs was to do with the fact that they are so hard to train and they confused intelligence with trainability. However, when I saw her with the other dog I was struck by something I had noticed in some photographs. Some deerhounds have very small heads; this one was abut 2inches taller and longer than Isla, but had a significantly smaller head. Could this explain differing percepions of deerhound intelligence?

Hi Sandy

Just reading your posts, our Deerhoun Club in the UK have a list of all Deerhoun Club members, I've ben tracked down myself from someone from Scotland using it, if you ask them they may be able to give you a list an you will be surprised how many there are lurking around WA.Incidentally, my Dad emigrated to Perth in 1982 and I visited him in 1988, a place called Ballajura, it was lovely and I would move over myself if I could!!!
You are very lucky, lovely dog and lovely place in the world to live

hi Lurch
Ballajura is not too far from me. I live in the foothills and enjoy the rural aspect. Would you have the email for Deerhound Club in the UK? Do you live in London or outside. I love the UK, was there 2 years ago, my husband is from there but he likes living in Aussie. Do you have the one deerhound? I cant imagine owing more than one.
thanks for your email. S

Sandy, where abouts in the foothills? We used to live in Forrestfield, in the then new development area. My sister lives in Kalamunda, and my sis-in-law lives in Roleystone.

Hi Brollachan, we live in Helena Valley, not far at all from Kalamunda and Forrestfield. Roleystone is a bit further, about 30 mins from here. Are you in UK now?

Just re read your previous email and now realise you are in Tasmania. I have never been there but hope to in the near future. Do you have 1 or 2 deerhounds? Mine's name is Max and he looks just like the picture you have posted here.

Hi Beau

Where did you get your deerhound from? How long did you have him and do you have one at the moment. Yes, you are right, Max is fitting in nicely, he is most well behaved and polite. We love him to bits. I don't think there is a club in WA but I will keep looking.

Hi Bundaleer, not sure if I have answered your email or not, gets a bit confusing. Max is looking nice and healthy now. He was underweight and limped when we first got him, looked a bit of a sad sack I must say. Anyway, he deserves the good life and I am trying my best to see he gets it. Do you live in the city?
Who knows, Max may have been one of the dogs you heard about, I also heard that his previous owner had another deerhound, apparently wanted them for hunting!!!!!!!!

Re:New Owner 3 years, 12 months ago #292

Actually we have 3. 2 bitches and our boy. Xena was a rescue, and Bree and Lockie are from breeders. I show them and they have been doing very well.

Do all your dogs live inside, you would need quite a big house. Max is very low key but takes up a bit of room when he is sprawled out on the floor. We havenow relented and he goes on the couch (which we keep a cover on) even though he has a very comfy bed of his own. I can't imagine having 3 dogs of such size. How do they interact with each other. Do they all try for your attention at the same size.
Max body slams, stands on our feet and mouthes, do your dogs do all of this? We are not sure of what behaviour is normal for deerhounds.

Re:New Owner 3 years, 12 months ago #294

Funnily enough, we have a very small house but we all seem to fit quite comfortably. It can be a fight for a chair whether it be from the dogs or the cats.

Bed space can also be an issue

Standing on feet is a common thing. Bree and Lockie do that all the tie. Body slamming is another trait and I am always wary and braced when outside, especially if they are playing as they don't always watch where they are going.
Our hounds all get on but they do have their squablles occasionally. Lockie is a teenager and he is trying to push his barriers. In fact whoever said that males were more submissive and will back down have not come across this boy. He stands his ground which is a real nuisance.
Mouthing is also normal but make sure he doesn't bite too hard. Deerhounds are known for holding hands. Lockie has always been gentle with this but Bree tends to grab too hard so it is not encouraged. Xena has never mouthed, stood on feet or body slammed us. But she is a big grinner and will smile often.
As far as jealousy goes, Bree would be the worse.

Hi Sandy
Small world. I live in Watford, about 20 minutes from London, in Hertfordshire, where does your husband come from?
Yes, we only have one Deerhound, and a border terrier. He was the worst puppy I have ever owned. We have had lurchers and greyhounds, the last greyhound died a year before we got the Deerhound. We raced our Greyhounds and hunted with our Lurchers, when the law allowed it!
I went to Ballajura in 1988, I visited Burwood Casino? Sea World, my Dad had a boat an we went out to Rottnest Island. We shopped at Mirabooka? some names I have probably mispelt!! I would love to go back and live, but my children are 21,19 and 14 and the elder 2 wouldnt settle. My youngest plays golf at county level and is very good, hopefully he will go far and buys his Mum and Dad a nice house in Perth!!
Visit www.deerhound.co.uk and there will be links and contacts that you can access.
