Hi,

I'm Chrissie, I live in Edinburgh and am interested in finding out a bit more about deerhounds. To be honest I really don't know much at all about the breed right now. I've had a border collie growing up, and lived with my ex for five years who has a kenel of siberian Huskies. I looked after them full time while we were together, but havent had my own dog since we split as I've been living in the middle of the city. I'm moving house in September and starting a PhD, so will have a garden and be at home most of the day, so am starting to think about the possibility of a new dog... I saw met some deerhounds at Crufts and some other dog shows this summer and thought they were lovely, so I tought i'd join the forum and say hi and try and learn a bit more.

Looking forward to chatting with you all soon
Chrissie x

Hi there, we live in Midlands but came from Scotland, daughter at Edinburgh Uni and brother and family live there too. We are new to Deerhounds having had Freya (13 months) since she was 10 weeks. We love her to bits and have found all the DHs we have now met to be fantastic gentle giants. Have to say all the owners have been amazingly friendly and helpful too, and all totally committed to the welfare of this wonderful breed. I'm sure you'll get lots of info and support from the many more experienced owners and breeders on this site.

Hi Chrissie

Welcome to the site and all the best with your move and studies. If you're free on 20th June there's a championship dog show at Kelso (Border Union). It's an absolutely excellent venue and most of the Scottish owners and breeders will be there. You might want to come along perhaps and have a chat. I'll be coming up from the south east to show with my Mum who is based in Fife. I'll be showing our Cusidh hounds.

Deerhounds are super dogs to own though I find they do like doggy company especially when they're younger. So you might find yourself with deerhound plus one .....Doesn't have to be another deerhound though.

Elise

Hi Chrissie, do try to make it to Kelso as Elise suggested - I'm stewarding, so come and say hello once I've got a class in and under the judge's command.

Sid, Tavish, Dileas and DownJess in sunny East Lothian.

Wow! Thanks everyone!
What a lovely warm welcome! Yes, I will defininately come along to the show at Kelso, so Elsie, Sid and anyone else going along, I'll be sure to come and say hello. I'll be at some other shows down south later in the year too, so hopefully will get a chance to meet many of you and your dogs over the summer.

Crackadog - what does your daughter study at Edinburgh?

Elsie, I just googled Cusidh and found your website - looks really interesting, will have a proper look when I have more time. As for Deerhounds prefering company - this is the sort of thing I need to figure out! Having got with my ex when he had only one siberian husky, I know how difficult it can be for the dog and the owner if the dog doesn't like being alone. We quickly took on another sibe to keep the first company (now he has 6....!).
I would ultimately prefer to have two dogs, and it is my long term plan, but I do't know if i'd get them together - it depends how things go over the next few months, but would probably get one and then wait for a while - which ever breed, I'd have to figure out if this was ok for the puppy. Anyway, lots to think about, but no rush!

Finally - Anne - what is lure coursing and where is Rumbling Bridge?! lol lots to learn!... I'll go and search google and have a look, but sounds good whatever it is, so yes, I will come along sometime!

Thanks again for the lovely welcome, speak with you all soon.
Take good care,
Chrissie x

Hi and welcome
Our second hound was a lone dog and she was the best behaved hound, unlike the reprobates I have now

Welcome Chrissie...lure coursing is basically dogs chasing a plastic bag at high speed(or running in the opposite direction)while owners are politely insulted and ribbed on their dog's performance,or lack of it... As Sid said, take a look at threads..

Hi from jenny and Paul in New Zealand, with deerhounds Jag and Faye. I come from Edinburgh originally and my mother still lives there in the same house I was brought up in. I did my first degree at Edinburgh Uni. My wee sister lives in Dunbar and her hubby is in the police. Now I think of it my big sister is there too now, having returned from Canada. She works at the Royal Infirmary (do they still call it that??).
So welcome to the forum!! Have fun.

Close - it used to be Edinburgh Royal Infirmary when it was at Lauriston Place. Now it's in Little France and it's called the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

Hi Jenny,
where do you stay in New Zealand? I spent a year there when I was 19 and have lots of family in tht South Island. It's such a beautiful place, and such lovely people... really hoping to get back there for a holiday this winter (before I get a dog!).
Yes, they still call the hospital the Royal Infirmary - it's the one just south of town.
I often walk friends dogs on the beach at Dunbar - I stayed in a flat on Dunbar High St one summer a few years ago - it's a lovely place to stay. Hopefully we'll be moving out to East Lothian at the end of the summer.
Do you come back over often? When did you move? Did you get your deerhounds in NZ or did they move out with you?

Thanks for the welcome everyone - lure coursing sounds fun! I had a lot of fun running sled dogs when I was looking after them - more for the satisfaction of working together than anything. I'm not particularly competative, but do enjoy structured training and activities, so am keen on the idea of having a 'working' dog. Anyway, will read more of the other threads and try and learn a bit more.

Cheers guys x

Hi Chrissie
we live in Taupo - by the huge lake in the middle of the north island. I moved out to Dunedin 10 years ago then met my husband Paul, a kiwi, in Southland and he dragged me up to the north island. Basically I met him where the road south stops so I went to the end of the earth to find my perfect man. I got the deerhounds in from Australia as they aren't too many floating about here, but I have a breeding pair (sound like cockateils..)so am hoping to start breeding soon. Very excited about the bloodlines I have.
I used to live in Ormiston back in the late 80's, then all over the UK and Europe with various sheep related jobs.
We are planning a trip back in the nearish future to catch up. Trouble is what to with "les animeaux" (as they like to be collectively known) when we are away. Might leave Paul here and just take the kids, but the thought of taking Sarah , 4 and Ella 2 all that way is just to much to bear, so I might away and have a wee gin to calm my troubled nerves.
cheery.
ps always a bed here if you do come over.
