I already have a 5 yr old Doberman as well as 5 cats, 2 guinea pigs, 2 mice, numerous fish and 2 Friesian horses! I am hoping to show my new boy and I am new to showing dogs as well! so guess I'll be harassing poor Pam and Dave for some time yet! I pick him up next week so promise pictures then

Hello Sharon and welcome to the site Is your new puppy a boy or a girl and what are you going to name it? Deerhounds are the most wonderful dogs and you will very much enjoy him/her
From Trisha and Murray and Carys deerhounds in Wales UK

Edited to say Doh you did say it was a boy - sorry

Re:Hello from Australia 1 year, 7 months ago #26038

Hi Sharon, welcome from Helen and Murphy in London, where abouts in Australia are you?

Re:Hello from Australia 1 year, 7 months ago #26041

We are outside of Melbourne, up in the hills in a place called Emerald. I have named the pup Erik thanks so much for your lovely welcome, I am looking forward to learning more about this beautiful breed! I have been breeding Friesians for 8 years and showing them, I have bloodlines unique to Australia which is great! I love the medieval breeds which is why I love the deerhound!

Hi Sharon and welcome. I think you and I will get on really well, I also have a thing for medieval breeds which as a child drew me to the Deerhound
I live in Tassie, have 4 hounds. Im sure Dave and Pam told you how addictive they are

PS If I remember right, the horses in Ladyhawke were Friesians and I adored them.

And this is my mare Fly Away. I went on a holiday to the Netherlands in 2003 and came home with her

I had 9 of them at one stage but had to downsize when I went through a marriage breakup 6 years ago My new hubby just hopes I'll stick with these two for awhile.........Little does he know that Deerhounds are addictive..........LOL

Hi Sharon (and Erik)
Jenny and Paul here from New Zealand - we've already kind of met on Facebook. We have 3 deerhounds now (addicts) - Mapleridge Jaguar - Jag, Jacobite Rosashorn - Faye and now Eriks sister, Jacobite Creag Ealasaid - Pixie. We had planned to call her Cara but when she arrived here there was no way her name suited her.
We also have 2 cats, 2 guinea pigs, 1 rabbit, 15 chooks (spangles and brown shavers) and about 14 horses at the moment - mostly homebred sports horses. Just downsized from 20!!
Your mare is just gorgeous!!
Welcome to the forum! and to the heady world of deerhounds!

Re:Hello from Australia 1 year, 7 months ago #26055

PS Pixie has to be the smelliest puppy EVER!! Paul calls it Pixie wind. Think she keeps stealing cat food. nom nom nom

Hello Realitybites,

You have very nice horses.

How come a horse from the Netherlands to Australia, with a ship or flyer?

Re:Hello from Australia 1 year, 7 months ago #26071

They are flown over they spend 6 weeks in quarantine in the UK and then 2 weeks here in Australia. Not sure how that compares to importing a dog? Would guess transport wouldn't be as expensive as a horse?

Re:Hello from Australia 1 year, 7 months ago #26074

Hello Realitybites,

Thanks for your answer and informations.

A flight for a dog cost ca. 75 - 250 UK Pounds ( 130 - 435 Australian Dollar).

Dogs with a weight under 6 kg ( 13 pounds) can in the cabine, the another dogs must in the cargo room.

Re:Hello from Australia 1 year, 7 months ago #26075

Well that's alot cheaper than a horse! The transporrt alone cost me $16,000!! Might have to import a dog next LOL

Re:Hello from Australia 1 year, 7 months ago #26076

Actually Jeorg I think it is a bit more than that. It is more like a couple of thousand AU $. Then there is the cost of quarantine and pre and post vet checks. It cost one friend $10000 to import a dog from America.
Germany must be cheap

Hello Sharon,

Yes, a flight for horses is not cheaply.
I have heared a horse flight from the USA to Germany cost 8.000 EURO( 6,700 UK Pounds, 12,000 Australian Dollar).
It was before 2 years.
