Hello

I have been viewing the site for a while, getting wonderful advice and having the odd chuckle, I have also felt quite sneaky for not properly joining in. I am a Deerhound fan but I don't breed, show or course so I thought I probably hadn't anything to bring to the forum.

I've decided to come out of the woodwork because of the recent post from other Deerhound owners in the north west of England. They were wondering if they were the only Deerhound owners in this area, well, I also live inbetween Wigan and St Helens and have a wonderful Deerhound bitch called Mabel who is 3 years old.

Mabel had an operation two months ago to remove cysts from her side, part of the stitches are still not fully hardened so unfortunately for her she is on pavement walking and garden duty only - but I have taken note of where 'locals' run their dogs, so if you see another Deerhound at Wigan Flashes, It'll probably be me, unless someone else is also looking into the posts just as I did!!

Welcome Aliss and Mabel - I dont think you need to be an expert, I'm certainly not! Just an enthusiast and sharing experiences whatever they are is useful for everyone!

Hi and welcome

Look forward to bumping in to you and Mabel sometime round the flashes
it can sometimes get a bit muddy over there, especaly if you go
off the beaten track, so wellys are a must, especaly in winter.

Hi! I am so glad I signed up on this forum - I really did think I was the only DH owner in the area as I haven't seen another and it's fantastic to know Bailey and I are not alone!

Sorry to hear about the stitches - Bailey has been on lead duty up until fairly recently after having to have stitches following a dog attack. It has taken months to heal, but he is fine now.

Please do PM me if you are looking for company on walks, more than happy to join you on a lead walk.

Many thanks for your warm welcome.
Mabel is my first Deerhound, I did try to buy a Deerhound many years ago before we all had the internet but found it impossible to track puppies down. I have owned several other breed of dog but I doubt I will own any other now, in fact I am looking to get another puppy or older Deerhound as my Newfoundland died last year leaving a gap waiting to be filled.

Thanks for the advise, I do know where the flashes are because my dad's family came from around that area but I have never gone for a walk around there. I will definately be taking a ride out soon, it's only about a fifteen minute ride from where I live.

Aliss I've just remembered that I was exchanging EMails with a lady on a dating site several years back. She lived in Wigan and had a rescue Deerhound that she got from Battersea Dog Home. I'm not sure if she's on this site though but maybe you've seen her in Wigan.

Hi Fin

I took Mabel out today on the reclaimed land which was the old Bold Colliery and power station site, I don't know exactly whereabouts you live but this is a good place to walk, difficult to park a car though, I tend to go through the woodland rather than stick to the paths and it's usually pretty quiet. I let Mabel run free for a bit but she soon got exhausted so I put her back on the lead again, I expect we will have to build up her energy again after the operation.

Hi Robb

Like Fin I don't know anyone else around here with Deerhounds, plenty of Lurchers with Deerhound genes though, I've been stopped a couple of times by Lurcher lovers asking if Mabel is a good worker. I wanted a Deerhound in the first place because someone I knew had a hairy Lurcher, he looked like a Deerhound, a wonderful dog who disappeared one day in a busy high street.

Thank you for your welcome, I'm quite overwhelmed that people have taken the time to welcome me to the site. I have spent many holidays in Pembrokeshire, but haven't been back for a few years now, a lovely area, I especially remember happy times on Manorbier beach.

Hi & as you can see a warm welcome to you. You mentioned that you were looking for an older hound – well you can have both my adult males Bookle who’s nearly 10 & Brodie who is fast approaching 8 as they are both proven stud dogs & my two girls “Bird & Blaize” 4 years old & 10 months are both in season & they are driving me MAD (only joking, I wouldn’t part with them for the world). Oh & welcome from me too John AKA "the wigster"
