I just found this board, and am glad to find another place to help with my Deerhound withdrawal problems. I recently lost my 10.5yo to inoperable fibrosarcoma that formed around a migrated microchip.

I still have two Greyhounds and a GSD mix, but really miss Ian's unique outlook on life. I hope to get another Deerhound out of related lines, but right now it's too soon.

Thanks.

ETA: I'm in rural Nebraska, USA, southwest of Omaha.

So sorry to hear about Ian losing a dog isn't a nice exprience and I am sure there are plenty of us on herw with tales to tell, they are like our children.
Very worrying about the cause of his death, microchips, a thread has already been submitted regarding their so called integrity (if thats the word)
Welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy it as much as we all do!

Welcome to the forum hecate. So sorry to hear about Ian. They certainly leave a vacuum when they go. I hope you find another Deerie when the time is right. I can't imagine my life without my hounds.

Yes - welcome to the site and I am sure that it will help with your Deerie withdrawals. A very sad story about Ian - have replied to your post on microchips

So very sorry to hear about your loss. Give yourself time to grieve and remeber all the joy that was brought to you. The bond you shared will never be broken and
I do believe that our loved ones will be with us again. Human or otherwise...it gives me peace. I'm sure we have all read "The Rainbow Bridge'...still makes me cry - even at 48.
Best wishes for you....
Cassandra

Hi Hecate
Welcome to the site, and very sorry to hear about your loss. I have to totally agree with cassandra re "the Raibow Bridge". I don't know how many times I read it and cried after I lost Kerry, our lurcher. But don't worry time is a healer and in the future you will have another deerie.
Good luck

Thank you all. The hardest part about losing Ian was that until he came up with that expletive-deleted lump, he showed no signs of aging except for silvering of his eyebrows and beard. Still fit and active, still bouncing around like a youngster.

My retired and rejected racing Greyhounds routinely live to 15 without complications. Two of my remaining dogs, a Greyhound and a GSD mix, are both 12 and still tear around like lunatics (the third one, a just-coming-3yo Greyhound, IS a lunatic). Losing a dog at only 10+ seems far too soon.

Unfortunately with Deerhounds the age factor is something we just have to deal with, though it is good to see these long lived hounds that give us hope. My first DH died at the age of nine from renal failure and my second died at 6 and a half from a heart attack. Way to young!!
