Hi everyone, My name is Sally and with my partner, Alan, we own Claonaiglen Deerhounds.
I love showing our dogs and the social side of owning Deerhounds is great. Deerhound people are so friendly and helpful.

Hi Sally,

Where abouts are you? An introduction isn't a real introduction until you add lots of pictures of all your dogs!!!

I think it takes a special person to own 50 kg lap dogs, that must be why everyones so nice (and gets along).... and is ever so slightly insane;)

Hi Bundaleer, I live on a farm in Worcestershire, UK. We have 7 Deerhounds, 3 Lurchers, a Whippet (my daughters) and 4 working sheepdogs. All of the Dogs, except the working dogs, live in the house because they are not only show dogs but first and foremost much loved pets. I have posted a photo of Orrin but there are too many dogs to put all of them on but you could take a look at our new website to see the rest of them. The address is claonaiglendeerhounds.co.uk.

Best wishes

Sally

Hi Sally, and welcome to the site. I was just looking at your website. Do you have any problems with your dogs and the sheep? One of our Lurchers is quite difficult with sheep, we can never trust her entirely because she is a little unpredictable. I just wondered how you managed that when the dogs and sheep live so close together?

Orrin is beautiful. I hope you have a very big house with 11 dogs wandering around (probably all trying to get on the sofa too knowing sighthounds). I will definitely have a look at your website tonight when I'm not at uni trying (and failing) to draft a research paper. Our dogs have just moved to a 50acre farm (without me unfortunatly )and are having to adjust to cows and all the excitement of wallabies bouncing around all over the place just asking to be chased.

Here's a picture of our three (well two and a minature one) taken about a year ago now.

Hi Rob,
All of the Deerhounds are stock safe as is one of the Lurchers (Joe). The two Saluki x are not so good. Maya, because of her age, doesn't bother with them too much but Atiya will chase them. She has never got a hold of any sheep but she thinks it is great fun to run one until it collapses and then she is off after the next one. This is not so good when they are close to lambing. We introduce the dogs to sheep by putting them in a large pen with a few Tups (rams). Tups will stand up to a dog and not turn and run so if the dog tries to take hold of a Tup the Tup will lower his head and come at the dog. This gives the dog a certain amount of respect for sheep. Unfortunately Atiya came to us as a rescue and was a bit too old to try and train to be stock safe so we run her in fields with no stock in. We also have to be careful if there is sheep in the field next door because she is pretty adept at squeezing under gates and fences. Sally

Hi, Yes our house is quite big. Q. How many Deerhounds can you fit on a two seater sofa.
A. Four. They lie on top of each other. It says a lot for Deerhounds temperament doesn't it. I love the photo. Are your dogs related to each other? Sally

Hi Bundaleer,

Good luck with your research paper. What area do you work in? I can sympathise as often I'd much prefer being out with the dogs but I also often end up staying in writing papers! My area is environmental engineering and I work predominantly in wastewater treatment and hazardous substances research. Well someone has to and not all of it is smelly!

Sally, your website is great, I love the picture of the calf and the deerhound hogging the fire. Our dogs aren't related, the older bitch was bred from hunting lines (mainly used for pig and roo hunting in aus) but she has a severe grass allergy and pricked ears (when she's excited) so we had her desexed. She was our first introduction to Deerhounds and got us hooked so we then got the pup who is a Glassonby bred dog, with quite a lot of Kilbourne lines in him. He is a full litter brother to Lockie, Sams boy who has just recieved his champion title in Tasmania. I show him and maybe one day we'll get him a girlfriend

Hi Elise, I work in Animal behaviour, although I'm not a vet (I did an animal science degree.. more animal production than medicine). My PhD is specifically on Alzheimer's disease in dogs (a.k.a Canine cognitive dysfunction). I used to live on a wastewater recycling property that had 200acres of lucerne irrigated with the wastewater from a sewerage plant on the site so I'm all with you there. Fantastic place to ride the horse around

Brilliant photo. Nothing much escapes their attention does it? Mind you, what yours were looking at is a lot bigger than a rabbit!

Hi Bundaleer

What an excellent area to work on and very important. One of our lurchers who is 13 is beginning to get quite muddled.

I work at a small postgraduate only UK university. Is your work associated with a university vet school or in a science faculty?

I visited Australia in 2006 and some excellent wastewater recycling facilities in Adelaide.

Good luck with all your work and dogs of course.

Elise

I work at Sydney Universtiy in the vet faculty, a postgrad only uni would be good, then you wouldn't have all the first years running around acting "cool". I love uni holidays..so peaceful.

There are a few treatments for dog dementia out there (although their success varies) so it might be worth talking to your vet if you think it's becoming a problem.
