I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice to us, Our alfie is around 1 year old and came to us 5 months ago, he was a rescue dog and shows all the mannerism of a deerhound. Weve read up on the sight hound and others and he stand at 28inches to shoulder and is big and strong, his jawline is huge and the nearest dog i can find is deerhound or wolfhound, but hes the wrong colour?

So heres the question, we know hes a mix of something, but hes such alovely dog, he now needs a friend and we want to get the right dog for him in our house, any suggestions.

Hi and welcome to the site. Alfie looks a lovely dog. To me Alfie certainly appears to be a lurcher and very similar to an older lurcher of mine - Ben who I think was actually a Labrador cross with a greyhound/deerhound lurcher. I'm sure though others will have different options. Maybe Alfie would be very happy with a sighthound or lurcher? Deerhounds get on really well with Lurchers. A bitch would probably be a good idea. I find opposite sexes get on better.

Thankyou for the quick reply, weve already decided on a bitch, so we got that right! we so much want to find him a play mate, could you define sighthound or lurcher, hes alot bigger than a lurcher i think. but hes grown a 1 inch in the last month and still growing.

We cherish and just think it would be great for him to run with his own type...

The picture of him in the lake certainly has the deerhoundy look! He looks like he is a real mixbag and deffo a lurcher. As Elise says there are many on here that will have better thoughts on this. Be great if you got a D/H girly as a playmate for him

Wed like a girl deerhound, silly question and im sure i look like a numskill - but does anyone on this site sell them either a x or pedigree? i so much want to do this for him as hes changed our lives.

You are not a numbskull nor is your question a silly one. You have come to the right place to find your answers!

Deerhound pups (and adults) are not cheap! Be prepared to pay up to 900 quid. Do you want it as a companion or to show or breed from?

There plenty of D/H x's around - try looking in Countrymans weekly magazine (out each Wednesday - ads at the back) or there are internet sites like Epupz. There are also specific lurcher rescues that often have D/H x's for rehoming. Try Lurcherlink. www.lurcherlink.org or Evesham greyhound and lurcher rescue. There is also Many Tears in Carmarthenshire and a site called greyhound gap.

Welcome to the forum, that's a handsome dog you have there, I hope you find a companion for him soon. Google 'Deerhound pups for sale' this will bring up a few adverts. I'm sure there are people on here that will know of litters. Lurcherlink is a good place to find dogs for rehoming they often get the Xs.
