TOPIC: Dogsick (as in "homesick", not "carsick")

Dogsick (as in "homesick", not "carsick") 3 years, 5 months ago #3531

I found this site and thought, though I'm not a deerhound owner as yet, I might as well introduce myself.

I currently live in Utah, USA. My parents cruelly bought a deerhound as a family pet a year before I left for college, and completely ruined me for any other breed. I dream of owning and eventually breeding deerhound. Unfortunately, it will probably be some time before I can have one, as my husband and I both work, and I feel it wouldn't be responsible to bring a puppy into the home to be alone for most of the day. Additionally, there are no breeders for hundreds of miles around.

Therefore, I am biding my time and poring over every picture I can find, longing for the day when I can join the blessed ranks of deerhound owners. Thank you, everyone, for being here to feed my mild obsession.

Hello and welcome SilverRain - plenty to pour over here!

My dream finally came true in May of this year when Murray deerhound pup came into our lives aged 8 weeks old and life has not been the same since With me deerhounds aren't a mild obsession - it is a total obsession

Hello and welcome.
When I joined this board, I was a wannabee too. Meanwhile my wannabee status has gone.
Gettig a deerhoud may be tricky as they are almost as rare as droppings behind a rocking horse...
I have solved the problem with work by working from home, as i can do so. But deerhounds sleep quie much, so I think that a deer that gets enough excercise will manage to be left alone for some time, but of corse it depends on how many hours.

There is a small homepage with pics of my young deerhound. Unfortunately I have not managed to translate it to enlish yet, but it will get soon. The text is in danish, but the pictures will be the same.

Pentictons breeder also has a homepage, it is in German, but most pages have english versions in italics at the bottom of the page, and there are nice pictures.

Hi SilverRain, I like you hankered after a deerhound for many years and luckily, as my husband works nights have managed to satisfy my obsession. Our first dog was a lurcher - straight deerhound/greyhound cross - who we sadly lost to bone cancer five years ago. Distraught living in a dogless house we decided to bite the bullet and within a week had chosen our beloved deerhound Willow. Once you've been exposed to the weird and wonderful world of deerhounds I don't think you can ever go back. I just wish I had a pound for every time some idiot walks past saying 'that's a wolfhound that is'!
I know leave them to it.
Hopefully you'll be able to fulfill your dream in the not to distant future

Hi Silver Rain and welcome to the site. I hope we can feed your obsession. They are a truly unique and wonderful breed.

Thanks for the welcome, everyone. I'll probably mostly lurk, as I have no current fun stories to share, but I appreciate the welcome and the votes of faith that I'll be an owner soon.

And thanks for the links. I don't speak Danish, but I can handle the German!

Meanwhile, I'll attach an image of my dearly departed friend. He lived eleven years, and was finally put to sleep due to bone cancer. He's been gone about three years, now.
