TOPIC: Hi!

Hi! 3 years, 4 months ago #4516

Just thought Id join the chat and introduce my 'boys'!
Jock McTavish (sunday name) is the lighter of the two and is 4 years old. He is a chunky chap who loves his bath, getting dried but hates getting brushed! Any hints would be very welcome because it is turning into a very stressfull fight of wills!
Dougal (meaning Dark Stranger) never was a name more appropriate! A very lazy boy, who loves his bed. He is 3 now. A skinny boy that I am having trouble geting weight on, anybody have any ideas?

A thousand welcomes to you.
Well its too cold to bathe hounds here at the moment going down to -21C tonight. My girl hates the bath with a passion. I climb in tub so I can hold her still. I put a tough suction cup mat down to make her feel more secure. She still shivers uncontrollably (no matter the water temp.) As to the brushing I have found the best tool for her is a comb with rolling tines that doesn't seem to pull as much. She doesn't mind at all really. In the summer the best bath technique I found was to use two leashes on porch pillars like a horses head lead so that she couldn't move right or left. That worked great. To fatten up dogs a little too lean I have used Magic meat balls (dh people here swear by) Butter also seemed to help Cailean fill out a little. Barb:)

That looks good, the meatballs, but what is total cereal?

Your boys look lovely, Jockanddougal, welcome to the forum, there are some really knowlegable DH folk on here and it is good as we all learn something new every day.
What are your dogs pedigrees and where abouts are you in the world?

Hi and welcome

Re:Hi! 3 years, 4 months ago #4541

Hello and welcome to the site. My boy doesn't like being brushed either and I find it better when he standing rather than lying as he has a tendency to show me how much he dislikes it. I think he has a low tolerance level The Satin Balls or Magic Balls are a great idea to put some weight on.

Welcome to the sight. My dog doesn't mind a brush but hates a comb. I've been giving Ben breasts of lamb recently and find that it helps keep him keep some weight on.

We live in Dundee,on the East coast of Scotland.
I dont have any papers for Jock, poor thing came to us after a family meltdown,he was very dirty and matted (perhaps the route cause of the brushing issues). After his bath he came out, beautiful shiny grey coat with three white feet,it took longer to clean the bath afterwards!
Dougal was bought from a breeder in Biggar, Hilda Robertson. His dad, Kenmilltri Jock and mum, Tartraven Grimsay. Grandfathers on both sides champions, I swear he has a better pedigree than I do!

Hi JockandDougal - welcome to the site from a fellow Dundonian. My mommy is from Liff and my Granny still stays there but my mommy moved to Stirling a few months ago and that's where she brought me home to.

Your doggies are beautiful abd i;m sue they will be ok with baths and brushes will all the TLC you're giving them.

Truly Scrumptious.

Breast of lamb and raw green tripe are good for putting weight on. Your boys are lush

Welcome to you and your 2 lovely hounds !
Always good for putting weight on is adding extra fat to the diet - goodies like sourcream, cream , oil , fat meats like chicken ( skin on of course ! ) - those magic meatballs also seem to be really great !

Hi folks and thanks for the warmest of welcomes from all over the world! Also a huge ta for all the advice for trying to fatten up skinny dougal! my problem now is if there is nothing addad to his food he wont eat it! He looks at me as if to say 'come on mum where is the rest!!!'

Had to resort to cutting through the matty lumps jock had on his neck and back, then brushed through with a matt stripper! Sounds harsh but he kinda suits his shorter do and thankfully it will grow again.

Hi and welcome, there are lots of lovely hounds (& people) on here. Love the pic....were you holding him down in the snow??

Re:Hi! 3 years, 4 months ago #4750

As if?! He had just belted out from chasing rabbits and looked like a yeti, it was a quick grab and snap!
