Hello Im Sheona, owned by 2 deerhounds , Maggie and Ghillie and a deerhound lurcher called Henry.
maggie is 4 shes a blue grey and very pretty but a fussy little madam at times especially with her food!
Ghilie is 2 in september he is a grey brindle,
Henry is 9 his mum was a black greyhound and his dad was a brindle deerhound. He was my introduction to the bigger dog world. I also had a terrier called Jill who sadly has just passed away she was 15.
I live in the scottish highlands in sutherland in a very remote area. Plenty room for dogs here.
I look forward to getting to know everyone who like me, loves the scottish deerhound.

Hi Sheona
Thanks for joining the site. I liked the pictures of your dogs. I've never been to your part of Scotland, but we really must. We come up quite often, but we never really get much further than Fife as most of Elise's rels are based around Edinburgh.

Welcome to the site.
Rob

Hi Sheona
Really glad that you found the site. Great to see more photos of Ghillie and Maggie. Glad that they both did so well at the show. Could you ask them if they could pass on some of their wisdom to Clunie?? She had her first companion dog show last Saturday and she did not enjoy being examined by the judge and growled at her, then she found the judges secret dog biscuit stash and stole a bag! When she was in the next class she remembered exactly where the biscuits were and had a second go!
Fingal, lurcher did manage a 6th place in the crossbreed competition.!
I'll drop you an e-mail at home later this pm
Vicky

Re:hello Im Sheona, 3 years, 9 months ago #875

Hi Sheona
Yes we are in England. We (Elise and I and our son Lachlan) currently live in Milton Keynes. I am from Sheffield and Elise was brought up all over Scotland. They moved around a fair amount.

I have not yet read all the threads yet are you won of the people who go coursing?

Re:hello Im Sheona, 3 years, 9 months ago #881

There are a few but not many. The highest population in Australia are in Victoria. Of course there are quite a few Deerhounds/DHx's owned by hunters. At a country show we were at in May, a gentleman approached my husband asking how much we wanted for Lockie as he would be ideal put over a greyhound for hunting. He got a short shift!! As for the weather it is cold and icy here. At the moment all dogs are in front of the fire.

Just curious, why you'd be against letting Lockie be used to breed a Greyhound. The off-spring would be great with the atributes of both. Lurchers/staghounds that I've seen that were Deerhound cresses were great. I own one and a friend of mine from Yorkshire had great success in coursing with them.

Re:hello Im Sheona, 3 years, 9 months ago #884

I was wondering that too, we had a Greyhound/Deerhound lurcher (with a bit of collie thrown in for brains) he was the best dog we have ever owned and could he hunt! Back in the days when hunting was legal of course, he bought home the supper!
I would certainly cross my deerhound with a greyhound any day, we are just about to visit 2 greyhound kennels in Ireland on our hols, you never know!!

My Lurcher, Aeriss is Mostly Greyhound with Deerhound and a hint of Saluki and American Bull in the back-ground. She's smart, a natural retriver, fast and all prey drive. But she is the most tractable of my dogs. Crossing certainly doesn't hurt the dogs. I do have to say that I'd be really picky as to whom I'd breed and that includes the people and then the dog.

Hi Sheona,
Sounds like you live in a great part of the UK for Deerhounds. Your dogs look really great judging from the pictures. I live in the countryside in Shropshire which is relatively remote for England but its still difficult to take dogs out off lead.

I'm hoping to tour Scotland with my dog when I get a camper van shortly, I hope.

Best Wishes

What can I say Terry, I'm a purist plus it is against our canine controlling body Code of Ethics to cross breed. If I was out for a buck maybe but I am more concerned with keeping the breed pure and doing what I can to better it. In saying that I'm not against Lurchers as they are lovely dogs
I also am concerned about the living conditions here for many hunters. They are not how I would like to see my dogs in, that's for sure!

I have a deerhound cross, Greyhound, called henry and hes lovely and he was my first big dog, and i think the smareter of the three. However I would never put a greyhound to maggie my deerhound bitch because of the hard time some deerhounds can have when having a litter of pups. However I dont think I would mind if some one wanted to use Ghillie for there Greyhound bitch, A lot would depened on how the person came across when speaking to me...... sheona

We live just outside Melbourne in Australia and have 4 Deerhounds 1 elderly Whippet and a rescue Greyhound. It's good o find a forum where Deerhound owners can keep in touch.

Hi, Brollachan,
I tend to be a purist too, but I believe for some things done with care, exceptions can be made. That's the key I think. Careful consideration by the one breeding and careful vetting of the person to whom the pups go too. The lurchers from the breeder of my gal Aeriss were highly prized. And they were selective people. she's a great fit with my Deerie girls.

And Sheona, that's a good looking dog.

THis is Aeriss.
