Sam is my sisters dog
crystalsmarch09_037.JPG
he is not a DH.

last night her Bichon Frise was attacked by a what she said looked like a pit bull. this dog had sam in its mouth and was tossing him around like a rag doll while she was hitting the dog with everything could. the so called owner was yelling don’t hurt my dog..
this dog had Sam in a death grip and would not let go, luckily a cyclists was passing and knew what pressure points to press to get the jaws open..once freed Sam ran away and went missing for several hours..
the police and dog wardens where called but they where useless apparently nothing can be done with a “dog on dog attack”..Meanwhile we have to pick up the pieces: angry:

looking on the bright side, it could have all been so much worse, at least he is still alive beit that he has 4 large punchure wounds in his neck.

It has brought back memories of 18mts ago when Finlay got attacked by a lab who ripped the side of him and he ended up with 21 stitches and I had a bill for £250, I am still waiting for the so called "responsible" owners of the lab to pay up.

The police where useless on that occasion even though this dog had a history of attacking other dogs..
thanks for listning

How awful. Is the owner going to pay for treatment?

I really don't like these bull terrier type dogs. I don't get what the attraction is and I've never seen one that was trained. Why do so many people have them? Is it just the macho image?

Poor Sam.

Poor lad, hope he heals quickly.

Have to say bull breeds in the right hands are fantastic dogs,
its the owners who are the problem not the breed.

Re:poor sam 3 years, 1 month ago #9525

Poor little Bichon, see my earlier posts about Staffies/Pit Bull breeds, I won't bore you all again.

A few years back it was Rottweillers, small men, tattoo's almost always had a Rottie, nowadays Staffs seem to be a fashion accesory. They see a cute pup, possibly going cheap, buy it, no idea what or how to train it, dog gets to about 18 months, bang it attacks other dogs. They always say "He's never done that before"

Unfortunately if both dogs are off the lead, the Police won't act. They should bring a law in where ALL dogs ae muzzled n parks etc. I had to muzzle my greyhound when she was attached to a track, incase she caught a cat!!! when she finished racing I never had to? Why? she now knows she is retired????

God, what a mess! I hope poor Sam recovers OK.

Re:poor sam 3 years, 1 month ago #9547

Yeah, this is the thing, an attack like that can change a dogs lovely personality. When my border was attacked, prior to the attack, he was bubbly happy little lad, after it changed him. My poor brother in law knocked at our door as he had broken down, he came through the back gate with his staff.....big mistake, Paddy launched himself at it. It's the same colour as the one that attacked him, he must have thought it the same dog and it was coming in his garden! Anyhow, he changed, he has now attacked 3 dogs, luckily he is little and it isn't such a big deal then. He attacked a doberman a few months back, who rightly put him in his place and he seems ok now. He was lovely at Newbury, so glad I took him.

Poor Sam, hope he's getting well.
I agreed its not the breed, it is the owner who is stupid.

I hope I never should experience a situation like this. I think that I went mad and attacked the dog and get killed by myself because of that.

I really hope the owner pay your sister for all vet. bills and everything.

Poor boy, I hope he is better soon. Pit bulls really should not be in this country anymore. When I was working in the vets the law (which is an ass) stated that any pit bull or look alike should be 3rd party insured, to wear a muzzle in public, nobody under the age of 18 to walk them and they should be on a lead at all times. Spayed or castrated, and tatooed on the inner thigh. But this does not happen nobody to police it! Any dog not just bull breeds in the wrong hands can be a menace. My poor Finley was attacked 3 times all by staffordshire bull terriers. I hope the little guy has not been put off by this attack.

I dont want to diswade from whats happened to sam,

But i think we have to think Deed Not Breed.

Up untill last year, i didnt like bull breeds, thought they was ott, very unprdictable,
and just not a dog i ever wanted, with all the chaves that own them, and all the news paper reports, but thats because i didnt know the breed, i mean realy know the breed,

Last year i had to take on a bull breed, find him a new home,
he was 4-5 months old and never even been socalised, even though i had offerend to socalise him and take him out, they wouldnt, they thought he would like there last ddb attack another dog, they had 4 kids and 1 on the way, eventualy i perswaded them to let me take him and rehome him, he was ott, out of controal and had never had anything done with him, if they had of kept him any longer, i do think he would have been classed as a dangerous dog, as he had never been outside the garden, he was in there all day on his own and brought in at night when the kids were in bed, a friend helped me out by fostering him, as she has younger dogs he could play with, after a lot of sleepless nights i eventualy found a rescue, that helped me rehome him, hes still chipped to me, so if anything happens he will come back to me,
he did change my thinking on bull breeds, as once we carmed him down, he was the most loving and gental dog going, he even won first in the puppy class at the greyhound gap show,
he spent most of the day with a friends kids, first time around a lot of dogs and people, and never put a foot out of place, i do still worry about him, as hes a DDB x AB and if someone wanted to could class him as type, he a big lad and heavy.
this is where he lived - all day every day.

In his foster home.

At the gap show.

Like i say, Tye changed my thinking, and i still do think we shouldnt lump the breed as a whole, bull breeds are haveing a hard enough time as it is, and they need all the help they can get, everyone still missis Tye and if things had of been different he would have probably stopped, as he was the most loving - outgoing and gental dog that you could ever wish to meet, as it is hes in the most fantastic home i could ever wish for, and i will always be there for him no matter what.

Hi Jane,
You did a wonderful job giving Tye a new life he is very lucky that you were able to help him. The pic in the garden/yard is so sad, hopefully he will have a great life in his new home thanks to you, well done.
I also hope that Sam makes a good recovery and is not to traumatised by what has happenened to him

Hope poor Sam recovers well in both the mental and physical stakes. I agree that not all in the same breeds are the same temprament. There is a guy walks his bitch off lead near where we live-no hassle. A different guy has his on lead and it is a nightmare, it is a dog though, could this make a difference?

Lots of love to poor Sam, I hope he soon recovers fully, bless him

Sadly too many attacks by dogs who's owners should NOT be allowed to have a dog at all

Helen, I don't believe you - he's a sweet little thing. Look at this angelic little face!
Maybe he was so good at Newbury because all the dogs there looked like his best friend Murphy?
(sorry for delay, will email pics to you soon)

Its so nice to get your best wishes, i have passed them on to my sister..
I am amazed by Sam’s progress, He is already running about barking at anything that moves, which normally annoys us all, but we are delighted see him getting back to normal (wonder how long that will last).
Although He is scratching the wound which keeps it bleeding.
The owner of the pit bull disappeared after the attack doubt if we well ever see him again..
The ironic thing is, Sam being a rescue dog was very badly treated. he is a little snappy which means He always wears a muzzle encase he nips someone,..what damage can a bicheon do compared to one of these dogs, it had nether a lead or muzzle.

[i]But i think we have to think Deed Not Breed. you are totaly correct its the owners that should be taken to task...all i ask is for this dog and others with a history of attacking other dogs is to wear a muzzle...

Thanks again

Lets hope little Sam is on the mend, he looks a lovely little dog.

Thanks Sue, yes Paddy does look angelic, and not being a terrier person (hubby's dog) I am smitten with him, he is a darling and fantastic with the kids, maybe he just needed teaching a lesson and the dobie did that for sure!

Jul, your rescue dog looks very much boxer, perhaps that is why he is such a lovely boy

I think its terrible that vicious dogs can attack dogs like poor Sam and get away with it. I do however agree with Sue that its not simply the breed. 10 years ago I took in a Staffie, he was 10 years old and had been on the streets around Birmingham most of his life. His owner was fond of him but could not look after himself let alone a dog. The dog had a very loving nature and he loved all the kids in the area who gave him treats when he passed by on his rounds.

He was absolutely fine with small and medium sized dogs although he hated large dogs with long hair for some reason. He went after my cat at first but once I had scolded him never did it again. I was reluctant to take him in initially as I had never been fond of Staffies as a breed but was totally surprised by his soft loving nature. Although he only lived a few years after I took him in it has taught me that the breed is not all bad and it's the way the dog is kept that is the main issue.

Poor Sam! I hope he makes a full physical and mental recovery from his terrifying attack.

I beg to differ with some peoples opinions on "bull breeds". After 19 years of veterinary nursing, I have feel it is socialisation and training that makes a balanced and stable dog, not the breed.

My own DH Bernard has been attacked three times that required sutures (and he never retailated once!). First time by a Jack Russell Terrier (80 stitches), the second time by a pair of miniature schnauzers, and the third time by a GSD. On each occasion, Bernard was on an leash in "on leash only" areas and the offending dogs were off leash.

Not one of the owners of the offending dogs contributed to the stitch-up bills.

I have never met a "bull breed" in practice, that cannot be reasoned with. We have FAR more trouble with Shar Peis, Chow Chows, and spoiled small cross breed dogs.
