He has broken toe on his front paw, the outside toe. I don't know how it happened or how common it is, but it is heavily strapped and I will be taking him to the vet hospital on Monday. I am thinking of asking the vet to re-Xray the paw to make sure that the bone is in proper position as he is very active when out of his crate. I feel I can't leave him in his crate all the time as he gets bored and chews at his bandage. He kept me awake most of last night for comforting and toileting poor little boy.

Welcome Carolew Bracken is a lovely looking boy. There is a thread in the health section about a Saluki who had a brolen toe. Try not to crate too much. There isn't really a lot that can be done apart from bandaging to support the toe and limited exercise.
We haven't had a hound break their toe as yet but there are members which have and I'm sure they will give you good advice.

having experienced various forms of injury to deerhounds one piece of knowledge I can pass on is to use a cover over the plaster I find that rubber gloves adapted to fit will protect plaster and prevent chewing. Obviously if over a bandage its not ideal as it can cause the skin to sweat rather than breathe. On another note I have and would never "crate" a Deerhound wether puppy or not movement is better restricted by supervision than by a "cage" Im sure Im not alone in that opinion.

Hi Carolew, Bracken is very nice I am sorry for you and him that he broken a toe. Please read my thread about my daugthers saluki who break a toe. Do not crate him to much. I think it is a bad thing to do. Put a bandage and walk him in lead instead.

Hi Daisy broke her toe and the vet decided not to Xray as he said the treament would be the same either way.

He didn't advise crating but did say keep her outside activies restricted ie. not to let her out to play with Mack our other deerhound. We just kept her as calm as possible and she got over it slowly.

Hope everything is OK.

Hope Bracken is feeling much better already - 2 of my deerhounds had had broken toes over the years ( running /hunting in difficult terreain ) and I didn't do much , they healed quickly and completely on their own , within 2-3 weeks all was back to normal . I only did give arnica a few times per day and kept them on leash for a while ; I also put a shoe with a " leather sole " on the paw when going out for our walks as I thought , this would keep the toe from moving too much . No xrays and no bandage . If I had to contain a pup in house/yard I'd always use an xpenn , never a crate ( never did so so far at home , but at some of the puppy trainings I had to bring one ) .
Much worse than a broken toe was a ruptured ligament in one of the " pinky toes " last winter - this took about 3mths to fully heal , but she could run free , no restrictions other than " self imposed " ones .....
All the best to you and your sweet pup ,

Verena
