Carys is 6 months old and has started to display signs of her coming into season. Is she too young for this or is it normal? Having had male dogs and Smokey who has been spayed I am a bit uncertain about bitches in season

Are you sure it is not just her hormones changing? It could be that she could come in at 6 months but as they are big dogs I would think it is more likely to be nearer to a year + everyone is different though.

It is a bit earlier that usual for Deerhounds, all the bitches I've had have been 12+ months when they have come in to season. Still having said this it's not impossible.

Hi Houndy
Like you I'd never had a non spayed female dog, so was not sure what age Clunie would have her first season at. However she was fully 13 months before her first one. I'd imagine that it could be hormones changing etc. We're just 'looking forward'to her second one possibly in a months time...

Thanks - I hope that she isn't coming into season yet. Maybe she is just being a 'flirty Gertie'

Both of our bitches didn't come into their first season till they were around 14 months.

Speaking of seasons...we have been having fun and games here with Bree in season. This causes a lot of bedroom shuffling, whimpering and howling. Lockie has gone off his food and is being the biggest sap. What has worked well is putting Bree into a large soft crate at night so we can all be together. Lockie settles down quickly and we have a peaceful night without howling and continual whimpering. Now if we could just get the cat to shut up we could get a full nights rest

Hi Houndy, has anything developed from this yet, this is very young for a DH to come into season.

Hi Pam - no thank goodness! I met a guy when out walking my dogs and he was one of these 'know it all's' and as Carys was doing her flirting act with his dogs he said 'she's coming into season' and as I haven't had experience with an unspayed bitch I thought that maybe he was right. There have been no signs of a season and as others have said it is too early. She is only 7 months but I will keep a close eye on her

Hi houndy brodie is the same it is her hormones changing to that of a young ladies. Blue has been taking an interest and following her around but the vet said it is just her growing up and not to worry until she is around a year old as larger dogs come into season later than smaller breeds.
