How did everyone think of their kennel name? Mine was my late husbands middle names. Norman was born in Scotland and his parents gave him two surnames for his middle names. He was Norman Hamilton Hill Wilson so hence mine was easy to think of "Hamiltonhill".

Re:Affix 2 years, 11 months ago #11707

I wondered how you came to that!

There's an area of the city of Glasgow north of the city centre, called Hamiltonhill, you see, and every time I saw your affix I had images of some brave soul raising deerhounds in an area where, let's just say, I wouldn't go after dark...

Eddie Stobart (the haulage firm) had a depot in Hamiltonhill. You must have seen Stobart lorries? They were the first to give drivers uniforms and apparently the drivers HAVE to wave back at you if you wave at them...

Yeah, completely off topic I know...

Michael

Ahem! Back on topic, I chose Lyart because it's an old Scots word meaning grey ahired - suits me as well as the dogs. It also has the advantage of being short, which means you can have a longer name to go with it.

Hi Sid,
I never ever thought of you as being "greyhaired" strange how other people view us isnt it.
My affix is self explanatory as it is a combination of my Hounds and my Hawks "Greyhawks" couldnt fit the horse into it as well!!!!!

Why thank you kindly, ma'am! I used to have quite dark hair, but that was long ago and in another country etc.

Wish I'd realised that when I picked mine!

Ellnkayvee i.e. Lynne & Keith Vayro.

I wouldnt worry mine is only one letter shorter than yours and it still leaves plenty of room for registering puppies names.

Re:Affix 2 years, 11 months ago #11724

I wanted a gaelic name and Brollachan came up as Scottish highland spirit. It wasn't till after I had registered that I found out the full story. Apparently only it's eyes and teeth are visible which can be apt at times and the hounds can stalk and pounce too

We chose Celynnen , which is welsh for "Holly". Who was a beloved labrador we lost a few years back.

We applied for an affix and we are now in the process of transfering the names. It is very exciting!

We chose Glenhaigh. The first 7 letters are an anagram of the village we live in. and the last "gh" stands for Glorious Hounds

We have even made a logo on the computer which we have put on the side of the van.

What do you think?

Re:Affix 2 years, 11 months ago #11746

As it,s Welsh the "C" becomes "K" so everyone will probably pronounce it "Selynnen" . I had a Deerhound called "Cellan" which got called "Sellan"!!!!!
What a lovely thought to have an affix after a loved lost pet.

I like the logo MrsMc.

Cusidh is my Mum's and my affix. Even after many a lesson with Ann Smart I still can't pronounce most of the names my Mum chooses. But Cusidh is pronounced coo shee. Cu [coo] is hound; sith [shee] is fairy in Gaelic. These dogs are from Celtic mythology, particularly associated with the Hebrides, arousing fear because of their appearance and association with the fairy race and also because when they barked three times it was seen as a omen of things to come.

At our first breed show using our own Affix we did indeed receive a reprimand from Miss Noble about using a Gaelic affix which no one in England would understand!

Re:Affix 2 years, 11 months ago #11767

Mrs Mc - you've done a great job with the logo: it's really stunning.

Elise - there's a really nice article on wikipedia about the enormous, otherworldly hound your affix is named after here.

Apparently they were the size of a cow, and the Hound of the Baskervilles was based upon the Irish tradition of the story.

So - a most apt affix...and I rather hope your mum gave Miss Noble what for!

Have affectionately refer to our three as "the hairy monsters" so it could only be Hairymon. Did not even tell "H" when I applied so it was a big surprise to him too

Re:Affix 2 years, 11 months ago #12140

No prizes for guessing where I got my kennel name, eh?

Dr Finlay's Casebook was the first TV series that made an impression on me. Who could forget Andrew Cruickshank ....

And of course my foundation sire was Dr Findlay (prefer that spelling) and his first litter were named after characters or places from the AJ Cronin book (Adventures in Two Worlds).

Interesting to read about Hamiltonhill --I too thought it was named after the place so now I know better!

I have enjoyed reading this thread with great interest, lovely names with great ideas behind them.
I chose 'Lyndorthwin' by mixing up the names of my Step Mum, Foster Mum and Dad, who were all very special people and are all in heaven now..... hope they don't mind

Re:Affix 2 years, 11 months ago #12200

What a lovely thing to do, they were obviously very special to you! Do you need papers to get an affix cos dont have any for jock? Gx

You don't need papers to apply for an Affix but you wouldn't be able to add the affix to Jock's name officially but if you got a registered dog you could then add your affix to their name.
