I have friends with Sammies and another with keeshounds...they have both had people spin and knit the dog hair. Has anyone tried or had someone do this for them/ Curious as to how it would look. I used to have Angora goats, they produce Mohair...since it's so sparklie white when washed up..it would blend nicely with the pretty silver/grey Deerhound hair.

I used to have a spinning wheel and have spun Jacob Sheep wool, always thought about a real Deerhound jumper never tried it. It is said that owners look like their dogs I thought it was a step too far!!

I know someone who has a knitted Deerhound hair waistcoat - it's quite the most unattractive garment I have ever seen, although the owner's a nice person. Deerhound hair looks better on the Deerhound.

Hmmm..any pictures?? A few years ago the Sammie club hosted their Cdn Nationals here in Edmonton at our fall show. They had several garments on display...it was quite interesting to see. When i had the goats i wanted to learn to spin...unfortunately my Fibromyalgia prevented this activity...but am still interested in maybe becoming a better knitter...hate to waste the hair, although I'm pleased to say he doesn't discard very much..love those hounds. When I had the Chow Chow I'd get bags of it.

Cass,
I knit a lot and during those long winter nights I made up a pattern with a full standing Deerhound on the front and two head studies on the back. I presented it to jenefer (Chapeltower) as a pressie and have knitted two more since. I can possible write/copy the pattern down for you if you want to have a go.
I also knitted Chapeltower Affix on it and I managed to knit it back to front!!!

Glynis. - Oh..please do..sounds incredible. Wish I had the talent ...at least a little more practice. It's becoming more popular here. I'm considering classes. They are offering all levels through a special program at City hall (of all places) in part to knit blankets for the homeless...saddly winter is only months away...ik!! To have such a personalized garment..a treasure.
Thanks...
Cassandra

It did appear in the last edition of the Deerhound Club mag news article that I write. I will have words with Summerisle who is a whiz with computers and see if I can get her to post the pics for you.

Hi Cass

My aunt who spins sheep wool, tried dog hair but I think that she found it very smelly, coarse and oily. However another friend tried hair from a standard poodle and it was successful, so I'd have to say that I'm not sure how it would go...

If you do try, let us know

Cheers

Daft question, but wouldnt it smell of damp dog when wet? Not the best smell in the world! Gx

Sorry....It took a couple of weeks I made another two including one for my brother who has a Norfolk Lurcher so his was a brown background, white stripes, and fawn coloured dog and Ive got one with a maroon background minus my affix.
I will be honest and say drawing the pictures transfering onto graph paper where each box is a stitch, then writing up the pattern and the rows made me boggily eyed!!
I took the drawing from an "Ardkinglas" hound picture I had.

Once spun and washed it won't smell doggy. It is the oils from the skin that make that smell. There was a prize/raffle item made from Deerhound hair that was at last years US Specialty? Can't remember if it was a hat and scarf, a jumper or a throw...
