Is anyone here a member of the UK Deerhound Club.

Can they tell me how you are supposed to join if you don't know anyone
who is already a member to act as a proposer or seconder ?

I have had the same trouble I only Know of the breeder of my bitch, as Ghillie came from Ireland. I got the sceond reference i got from a vet, but they the (deerhound society) did not even have the good manners to write back. I think it must be a very narrow minded lot......sheona

Yes I agree with CiCoch.
I wondered how on earth you were meant to join it if you didn't already know people in it. I must admit that i had never thought of using the Vet as a referee. Does the Vet have to be a member of the Club, Sheona?
It kind of puts me off joining if they don't have manners to reply - maybe it is too elitist? - That would be a shame as it should be for any deerhound owner and for the good of the breed. I'll stop ranting now!

Yes, I'm a member of the Deerhound club. Usually, what happens re joining is that when you first start off with deerhounds the breeder of your dog perhaps will propose you and they will then know of other people who you also get to know to second you! Yes, does seem a bit complicated when written like that. I'm fairly sure that both proposers need to be members of the Deerhound club. I'm not sure Clunie how near to my Mum you are - she is based in Fife. But if it's any help I can put you in touch with her re acting as a proposer to the club. I stay in Milton Keynes. CiCoch I think there are members of this forum based roughly in your area too.

I think what might have been the problem recently re replying to membership enquiries is that David Murray (the membership secretary) has not been very well recently so might be behind re applications. Would perhaps be worth following up Sheona.

I benefit from club membership and hopefully I'm not too elitist - give me a few more years though and who knows! You can get the form etc to join from the Deerhound Club web site.

Thank you very much Elise for your very useful response. I'll get back to you reagding your mum, if that is OK. Fife is not too far away - unless it is the East Neuk - even then not too far.
Sorry to hear about the membership secretary.
Perhaps when you are base in the more rural areas, unless you have been involved in showing, it is more difficult to find other deerhound club members?
Thanks again
Vicky:)

I joined about 3 years ago and can't remember having to get proposers, if I did, it would have been my dogs breeder.
It really benefits me being a member, even for the newsletter/magazine that comes out, I read that book for weeks! Also, membership entitles you to enter the Club Shows, where you can get to meet other dogs and owners.
I would have thought the dog could propose you!!! after all it is his club!!

Yes David has been very ill, so I am sure this is the reason

Its difficult re this two people signatures to become a member, I would prefer the same rules as the Wolfhound Club, which is

You join as an associate member for three years before being entitled to full membership, this means new members cannot vote for committee, or win the cups I personally think this is a really good idea. you do not need to be proposed to join but you have to serve your apprenticeship much better I think

Now, clunie I am happy to second you just drop me a pm, and anyone else pm me, and maybe we can have a chat on phone I think if people are interested enough to support this site, they would be a positive asset to the club,

Re:The Deerhound Club UK 3 years, 8 months ago #1365

What happens if you want to join from an international perspective? Impossible to get signatures but I was interested in getting the publication.

I think this subject is well worth a mention to commitee members, i will pass it on,
Also perphaps a subject worth discussing at the Next Agm

As I have said I personally think the Wolfhound Club has got it right

I am not at all keen on the new magazine I liked the old style

I am a member , too - had the good luck to know a breeder here in BC who is a member and then the breeder of my Disa ( Chapeltower ) was of course able to vouch for me . Perhaps there are some members in Australia who can recommend you ? I do prefer , though , the option the American Deerhound Club gives you , one can subscribe to their magazine and does not have to become a member to do so . I think if I wanted to be a member there , I needed the 2 recommendations , too. Not being that involved ( yet ? ), resp. too far away ( England ) , I do not need the right to vote or similar , but am for sure interested in the publications .

Whooppee woo! The Newsletter arrived in the post today and as you can
imagine, I have done nothing but sit on my bum and read it. There is an interesting article on hunting in there, so join, it is worth it, just for the magazine alone!I shall read every inch of it, it will take me a good week here and there.

Hi steve, If you could send me the form I'd gladly propose you and I can get someone to to second you as well. As Lurch said, there are great benefits from being a member, the Newsletter being one of them (there is a mad scramble in this house to get to it first). And then of course there is the Breed Show weekend. FANTASTIC! not just for the showing but for the social side of it as well. You don't have to show your hound to come to the Breed show and next year it is at the Dunblane Hydro Hotel in Scotland. There is a photo of the hotel in the newsletter that has just come out and it looks brilliant. Sally

We are members, we were lucky enough to get a signature from a breeder who then took the forms to another member to sign as well. I really appeciated this as they would have been so busy but they made the time. Otherwise we would have struggled. We went to the Breed show in coventry and it was just fantastic. What a sight to see so many deerhound wondering around the grounds. It took me a while to get used to it as we rarely see them apart from at shows etc.

Hi Sally , thankyou very much for your offer. If you email me your address I'll get the form sent out. Rob has also offered to sponsor my application so I'm OK for a seconder.

Many thanks.

HI Steve, I have received your Deerhound Application Form. Sue Reynolds is coming here on Tuesday and she has said she will be your seconder. I will forward the form straight on to David Murray, the new members sec. You do not have to send any money until you have been accepted (just a formality). Dont't expect to hear from the club straight away because new members are brought up at the committee meetings and the next one isn't until November. They will contact you to say you have been accepted and you then send your joining fee. Sally

Hello Sam, I have spoken to a committe member today and I can propose you and get someone else to second you. You will need to download the membership form from the Deerhound Club website, fill in your bit and then send it to me to complete the rest.

I am happy to do this for you if you still want to join.

Re:The Deerhound Club UK 3 years, 8 months ago #1588

I don't mind vouching for you too, feels like we have known each other for years!!
