Today Brice went for a wander round his favourite town .......... Stratford.

Now he isn't in to shakespeare at all but he is very much into all the attention he gets from all the tourists.

During our trip he has been photographed, hugged, kissed and generally loved. We met a lady whose relatives used to use deerhounds in their work as gamekeepers in poland in the 1920's and a lady from singapore who rescues dogs but had never seen anything like a deerhound. Last time we were there we met a gentleman who had very little english but we established he bred afghan hounds and he loved Brice and although he had not met a deerhound in the flesh he knew he wasn't a wolfhound (whereas 99% of people definitely mis identify him).

If I take any of the other dogs there they may get the odd comment but take Brice and even while I was trying to eat lunch I had people stopping to come and say hello to him.

He is a tired but happy boy this evening!

Isn't it nice when you walk them through a town, everybody always says I have always wanted one of them!! Glad you and Brice enjoyed your day.

Same with my 2! My pal and I had them out a trek the other day and stopped by McDonalds (in need of an icecream!). I held the dogs while Dot went in, by the time she came out we were surrounded! The spectators laughed when the boys stuck their noses in the tub to get the dregs of the icecream! Gx

I much prefer road walking Murphy in the summer, if I take him to the fields, he just plods along and doesn't really get proper excercise. But, has anyone noticed the amount of people who are actually laughing as they drive past in their cars, laughing, pointing! How strange, why do people do that? Have we got 2 heads? Is it me...or the dog?

Murphy gets lots of attention too and it is really good when they are youngsters, it gets them used to all sorts of noises, strange sights and smells and most of all people stroking and touching them!

I get that all the time too! My own brother saw me the other day when he was in his car and his 1st thought was 'Look at that wee wifie wi thae twa big dugs!' The swine! If thats what my much older sibling thinks, I dread to think what strangers do!? Gx

I love the attention that Carys and Murray get when we go out. All the locals know them now and they are quite famous. I love it when the local kids greet them with 'hey - murray, carys - how yr doin'. It's also surprising how many people you meet know someone that has had a deerhound

I agree with Lurch, Ben is much more active if I walk him along the local lanes. His favourite walk is to a nearby village where he investigates all the doggy smells to his hearts content.

Last sunday I walked him there and an event was being held at the local village hall. There were people sitting outside eating some cream scones, they all made a big fuss of him and gave him their plates to lick. They also suggested that I bring him along to the local dog show next weekend. Ben seemed to enjoy all the fuss and was reluctant to leave.

I also observe many people in cars who go by have a good look at us out of their windows although I don't know what they are saying!

Sounded like a lovely day. I get so many comments from patients who see them on the computer and they are a great distraction for them and make them relax

What do you do, Brollacher?

Re:Deerie Heaven 2 years, 10 months ago #13315

Gill I'm a Cardiac Technician

Re:Deerie Heaven 2 years, 10 months ago #13334

Great way to make them relax! Anybody with a cardiac issue needs to learn to relax. A welcome distraction I will bet? gx

Deerhounds certainly do cause us to relax. Whenever I'm feeling anxious I have a nice cuddle with one or two of them and calm is restored! Do you have your deerhound photos on a screensaver slideshow for your patients to watch Brollachan?
As for drhds getting attention on walks, I've always laughed at the number of Tiawanese photo albums mine must be in as we're constantly photographed by visitors on our walks along the beach. Bless them all for their excellent taste in dog breeds

Usually there isn't all that much meat on a deerhound , perhaps they like bones......

The nicest compliment I/ my girls ever got was , when someone said , after seing me walk with all 4 of them on leash " You look as if you are walking with a cloud of dogs " - loved this description !
