We lost our old girl Smudge at 18 years of age back in March and in April we adopted two rescue dogs. Gracie is a border collie/lurcher cross (we think) and 6 years old, but Fergus is a bit of a puzzle as he looks so much like a deerhound but seems a bit more 'thick-set'. Some people have said they think there's a bit of Irish Wolfhound in there!! he's 18 months and a real sweetie except for the dreaded prey-drive. We are working closely with a couple of trainers as we had a bad incident with a Jack Russell when we first adopted him. He is fine with big dogs but appears to look at small dogs as prey. Gracie seems dog-aggressive when out so we only let them off-leash when there's nothing around and the area is secure. Fergus is amazingly fast and its a joy to watch him run!! His feet thunder across the grass like a horse galloping!!! I am attempting to master the art of posting photos so that I can get everyone's advice on what exactly Fergus is so please watch this space and Id appreciate your opinions!! In the meantime my name is Jen and I live in East Yorks and would love to make contact with any other deerhound owners who live in the region!!

Hi jen
i don't know about the UK but here in NZ the kennel club run a breed identification test tht uses enhanced DNA to provide an accurate history of your dogs breed. Its called BITSA identification. More info at www.bitsa.com.au. Sure you could send a sample of hair or saliva for testing and find out for REAL!!!! Good luck in the search!

The BITSA kits sound like an excellent idea as those with cross-breeds are ever wondering what they've got. JPM you've given a good clue in saying Fergus sounds like a horse when he's running - that's a deerhound gallop all right, but a picture would help Fabulous that you've adopted rescue dogs. Welcome to the site.

I cannot find anywhere that gives me instructions on how to post a photo of Fergus so you can help to decide if he IS a deerhound. Can anyone help?

Try uploading to Photobucket, save your picture on your desktop,
then click on choose files, it will give you the choice of where to find your file,
double click on the picture and it should upload
once its uploaded right click on were it says img code,
and this is what you should get

Hi jpm
Sorry missed your post until now - wecome to the site.

Robb provided these instructions in another thread - hope this helps.

Best thing is just to give it a go we can always tidy up later.

1. Click Browse Button, to right of "Select Image file to attach"
2. Browse your computer to find your picture then click open.
3. Press Image Button to right of Browse button after positioning the cursor to the place in the message (If any) where you wish to insert the image.
4. Press Submit and wait for a short time dependant on your connection speed and how busy the site is.

You won't actually see your picture in your post until you have submitted it you should just see the word [I M G ] (without the spaces).

If you look at two of my messages posted above you may be able to help me work out if Fergus is indeed a deerhound!! If you back-track to top of page , hopefully you will see him!! I'll try to get some better photos as he is bigger now!

With the looks of him, he's a lurcher - probably does have deerhound bred in to him,
you need a side on picture of him stood.

The head shot definately looks Deerie but like Chook said a profile body shot would help.

He is beautiful - according to the 2 pics so far I rather get Wolfhound from him than deerhound . Not that many that stocky deerhounds out there - especially at this young age . Keep sending the pics please !

Thank you! I will try to take some more photos and post them. The bird table in the pic is just over 5ft and fergus has grown since so hes quite big and he certainly does seem stockier than a deerhound. I will also post a pic of Grace as shes also a bit of a mystery dog!! Unfortunately, Fergus was found in a stolen car and did not belong to the owners of the car so we have absolutely no background on him except hes about 18 months and the sweetest natured, most loveable dog until hes out walking and sees another dog!! We're working with Jim Greenwood on this!!!
