We took flo to our local agriculture show on wednesday, I thought the practis would would be good for her. While we were in the ring, and flo was working the public, every one had a smooth, she was in her eliment.Outside the ring was a spectator saying to his friend, why on earth would anyone want a long legged scruffy thing like that, his mate replyed, is it a wolf hound or deerhound, My hubbie was stood next to them and said, yes its a deerhound and its mine, and i bet your mate feels embarrassed now !all i can say is thay dont no what thay are missing.

Re:How rude 2 years, 9 months ago #14223

You are right Denise, they don't know what they aer missing and maybe that is just as well
I've only had one gentleman who said my dogs were ugly and that is from 10's of 100's of patients

Sacrilege !! - how can they say Deerhounds are ugly ?!?!? There ARE some really ugly dogs about, I guess you can get ugly dogs in any breed just like humans , but I've never seen an ugly Deerhound. Luckily for most of us, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Gorgeous ....

Here is wee Rufus - the very picture of perfection!! Who wouldn't want to plant a kiss on that muzzle? Frankly I seldom pass him by without stopping for a cuddle! Deerhounds ugly? Indeed.

Deerhound owners get to hear the one or other thing about their hounds. I have heard from a deerhound woner that her dog was called "a very poor quality Irish Wolfhound". Sure, a deerhound will never get BOB in the IW ring.
One I have ezperienced was when I walked my borzoi and my deerhound together. Oh, that is a beautiful dog, very noble breed, must have been an expensive dog! (The borzoi) And what is that one a mix of? (The deerhound).

I quite often get asked is layla a lurcher or what mix is she,
mind you i was asked the other week if she was a daschund,
all the local kids have now learned what breed she
and what they was used for, now i cant walk down the street
with out being stopped by them - so they can cuddle her lol.

Yikes...darn the times we don't have big truck to run them over....(just kidding)I felt that stab in the heart here...but then folks..let's remembre...Stupid is as stupid says. A few days ago I was on several sites looking for where the ignorant information (mostly from Dr Stanley Coren ..never liked his style anyway) on the Today show & the early show (american tv) there was a list of the 10 dumbest and 10 smartest dogs. Hold on...these fools said an Afghan was #1 dumbest ..I'm certain it's because the hounds are smarter than alot of these folks. Sure...they aren't push button...but then to me..those dogs are no fun to train and always are in need of direction. The ever wonderful, glorious Borzoi was # 5 dumb...ahhh, my heart. Anyone who has ever spent time w/ DH or a Borzoi can testify that thye are similar in traits...kind, sweet natured..very very smart, a joy to live with. BTW..my son had a Sheltie..and we had 13 Borzoi...Borzoi - all in house kennel area...never a problem.. Sheltie....drove me crazy,,,,needy little girl...prefer her to be in dog yard farthest from the house. She'd bark at planes...never se a hound do that.

There are those 2 different kinds of intelligence - the ones who learn1 million tricks and wait for commands and those , who think for themselves - I personaly always preferred the later one - never really aving been a follower myself . Both are clever and shoudn't even be compared imo .
As to scruffy ( love it , too - even call my house " Scruffy On The Lake " ....). 2 of the funnier remarks I heard was a boxer owner calling a deerhound " homely " and then , that happened to myself with my very first , super elegant deerhound girl , aged around 6mths then, in a " pretty phase " , ok ,I was walking in a dogpark and she played with some dogs when their owner called out , fairly loudly , that she , my dh , was about the clumsiest thing she had ever seen - what breed do you think she had ??? Old English Sheepdogs for heavens sake.....Quite right : Their loss !!!!

All I can add is that some people are just so ignorant and don't know what they are missing. At least deerhounds are dogs, unlike some of the smaller dog breeds which are smaller than our maine coon cats! But everyone is different and individual in their tastes...
But deerhounds scruffy!!!????

Hi there Steve/CiCoch , can you tell me a bit about Mac's breeding and/or even send a few more pics ( privately if you want to ) ? A friend of mine has started looking into british ( and scottish , of course....also irish I have to add ) lines for a future litter - she is mostly interested in their working abilities /soundness of mind and body /functionality and trainability for that matters . Thanks - I just adore Mac !! He'd do great out here in the wild , wild West of Canada.....

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, from the very first time I saw one I had to ask the owner what breed it was. I never dreamed that I would actually own them.

I had the same sort of thing happen to me, when i showed my bitch maggie who was quite young at the time at a local show, she was tall and not in proportion, however she won her class to the disapproval of the people who had a smoothed coated hound. when we were out of the ring they walked past and if looks could kill myself and maggie would be flat out!!!
