TOPIC: Best Deerhound Collars?

Best Deerhound Collars? 2 years, 9 months ago #14451

What collars do you prefer to put on your deerhounds for everyday use? I see from the photos that some use the wide collars that I associate with greyhounds, while others use more narrow ones. Just wondering what people pick and why?

This is what I use on my dogs - I take a piece of strapping and sew a couple of rings at the ends. I started doing this because the puppies kept chewing through collars and I was investing a small fortune in replacements.

For walks I use mendosa slip leads so nothing attaches to these collars other than the ID tags.

I use a thin leather collar with clip on lead for general walks. I find that a thinish (1 inch) collar is good or grabbing him by if the need arises. If I'm taking him somewhere where he'll remain on lead then I'll use a rope slip lead with no collar.

I opted for a leather hound collar for layla,
probably more for me than her lol, had it lined so it wouldnt rub,
but for indoors she weres an old hound collar,

when i do eventualy get some money together, i am thinking of getting all the dogs house collars, as there more safer if they catch on something, there a bit like a cats collar
in that they will brake if force is applyed.

This is the one layla weres out and about.

I use house collars and for going out a slip lead.
I used to but lovely fancy collaars for them but as my hounds love going in the water, ponds, the sea ect I found that the collars were quickly getting ruined

I use no collars at all in house or garden , for everyday walks I use thinnish , very lightweight fabric martingale type collars and , when I go to a place where they have to be on leash most of the time I use lined , wide sighthoundcollars ,also martingale style , to be easy on their tracheas /necks/throats . And , if one has to be on leash for a few weeks , be it injured or in heat , I usually have a harness on them as this is , in my experience , the gentlest on their anatomy - doesn't work with my Mawu for the time being as 1 of the straps for the harness sits right on her injured muscle .

Hi we use the thick collars if the dogs are going to be leashed for any length of time but we dont use any when they are around the house in the garden and such

We don't use collars indoors, I prefer to let them 'be free'!!, but have a 1 inch thick leather collar for walks and a halti if on a road walk.

Nothing in the house, a Greyhound collar for exercising and a very thin leather slip lead for showing.

A half check collar and thin leather lead for showing. A rope slip lead for walking, and a rolled leather collar for holding the tag for my phone number. Merlot has his own designer gear, soft lambs leather show lead and a soft leather collar (whippet) style. Slip rope lead for going out.

What a cutie pie - actually both , but the lurcher girl looks so happy in her fine and snug ( night ?) gown !
Through my work with TellingtonTTouch I found out , that lots of dogs actually love clothes and do benefit from them in certain situations , not only cold - but fear related situations/behaviours can be helped a lot with tshirts or other comfy dog clothes . I usually have a nice , big old tshirt with me during hunting season as Disa is extremely afraid of shots and dressing her up helps her relax quite a bit - the same goes for fear of thunderstorms and other , not noise related, fears as well . And , I do have warm blankets ( look like made for horses , will have to try and find some pics at another time ) and also shoes for them - when we have -30C in the most extreme times during the winters ( doesn't always happen ) my girls love their blankies and look quite fancieful in them . I initially bought them as they had to ride in the back of a pickup truck ( with canopy , of course , but it was frigging cold in there in winter and they couldn't really move to get warm , so , for longer drives I dressed them nice and warm ) . The shoes are mostly for injuries , my oldest deerhound girl got really badly cold feet once it hit -15C and couldn't walk really , so , she loved her shoes in winter ( she got some arthritis in her feet when she got older and her breeder had said , her dogs were known for getting cold feet ....).
I also actually do have more collars for my girls , another set , very light weight , stretchable clothcollars , wide and bright orange+reflecting stripe in the middle - made by a company that outfits hunters in Germany - and yes , they wear them when I go out in the dark and during hunting season - phonenumber written on them - for those I bring ropeleashes then . If you want to ckeck them out , they are made in Germany , just google " bodoband " - we imported several to Canada meanwhile , everyone loves them .

less stiffness in the mornings.

I love how they tell us what they want - od course your teeth will chatter when you feel cold - wish I had such nice pj's. Warmth is so good for most chronic pains , as arthritis e.g. will bring .

Loving the pictures. Murphy quite happily lets the kids put things on him, he loves furry things and likes to put my coat on!!! The kids wrap him up in blankets, he doesn't care, so laid back.
I wrapped him up in a wet towel when we had a heatwave back in June, to cool down.
