TOPIC: Blackberries

Blackberries 2 years, 9 months ago #14538

Over the last few days I have notice my dog eating out of the hedge. I have since discovered that they have a taste for blackberries is this common for them?

Re:Blackberries 2 years, 9 months ago #14540

All of my Deerhounds have enjoyed brambles, but make it quite clear that the tastiest ones are those offered by a human. Saves them getting their noses proggled, I suppose.

i used to let the brambles grow at the top of the garden,
just for the dogs - every year they would spend hours picking them once ripe lol.

Yes quite, as Sid says, around here they prefer them already picked, usually from the bowl on the ground that I've been dropping the berries into (wonder why it takes so long to fill a bowl?) Also noticed my little one pinching green beans from my garden, again I'd been dropping them freshly picked from the vine into a bowl on the ground. In the fall when I put hazelnuts in pans along the window ledges to dry out a bit the dogs like to pinch a few and crack them on my carpets before extracting the nuts. Very painful to the foot if not paying attention!

Yes mine love blackberries, some will pick their own and some prefer me to pick them. When the blackberries are in season I often come back from walks with purple hands from the dogs slurping the berries.

We do not have blackberies here ( nor nokias...) but all kinds of other wild berries growing - my girls really wait for them to ripen , check the bushes regulary and start picking early usually , when the berries are still greenish - being disappointed of course by the bad taste . They also love harvesting apples ( lots of old appletrees down here at the lakeshore , leftovers from times when there wasn't any irrigation )- wish I had more room in my yard to plant some fruit trees and berrie bushes at times ; but then , all kinds of good things grow in the bush .

Berries..oh, yeah...Zippo must have, and I mean Must..peanut butter and jam on his morning toast..Saskatoon Berry jam to be exact. strawberry doesn't do it for him. once that is done, then he'll go for his 'regular' breakfast...raw turkey, yogurt, fresh bananas, kelp powder..etc..but..gotta have the pb and saskatoon on toast first..

Elsie Grey has been helping herself to the apples on my apple tree in the garden She has also helped herself to bananas from the fruit bowl & loves strawberries (I was worried about the pips in strawberries) Daisy May won't go near fruit, it's just not her thing

Just a note of caution to the raspberry eaters. Years ago a dog I hadwas helping in the garden....she ate some raspberries and one had a wasp init...she was stung inside her mouth and eventually the hair on half her face fell out..the vet rec'd benedryl...but sadly, later she developed epilepsy - they thought caused by the severe reaction. she was a Poodle and lived to 18.

mine love all fruit (damned expensive) and the cherry tomatoes get stolen from the garden. The plus being that cherry tomato plants pop up ALL OVER the back yard and seem to be particularly vigorous after being dh processed!
