I'm not really sure Trish but the few I have seen have been clipped.

In the litter from which I got my very first deerhound were 2 woolly pups and the breeder started clipping them already as puppies and told the new owners , that this was the way to deal with the copious amounts of soft , fluffy hair in future , too .

Brush constantly. My dad used to brush ours every day. Now we cut her fur off short in the summer, because she gets too hot. Especially watch the fur behind the ears and between the paws. If the fur behind the ears knots, it pulls the ear out of place, and with the paws, mud and other crud sort of welds the fur together.

I always cut the fur over Emma's eyes short as well, because otherwise she looks like an old english sheepdog.

The best brush I found for her (I can't remember the name of it), looks like a rake, with wide spaced teeth, and rubber coming halfway up the teeth. It grooms her really well.

On the plus side, birds love using her fur for nests, as it's much finer than our other DH's. I'm just in the middle of giving Em's her final crop of the year, before winter. The only problem happens when my mum tries to help. We end up taking one side each, and apparently we have vastly different ideas on how short short is. I posted some pictures of her a while back, with before and after photos, they should still be on the site somewhere.

Good luck with your woolly, and please drop me a line to let me know if yours is as nuts as ours!

Nia
