TOPIC: A BIG win for Wist and a new title for Emily

I am over the moon as this past weekend Wist....MBIF FC Witsend Wistful SC, TT....won Best in Field at The Grand National in Colorado beating over 100 other Sighthounds. The course was over a mile long on rough terrain but my little girl ran like the wind to win the event. This event has been run yearly since 1975 and Wist is only the 2nd Deerhound to ever win it. The first Deerhound to win it was at the very first trial...this is not an easy one to win as they need both speed and stamina. in order to run in the Grand National Final your hound must have run 2 out of the 3 days with Sunday being one of those. They must have taken a BOB win and to make it fair to all they must run 3 times on Sunday before running for Best in Field. There were 15 dogs running for Best in Event on Sunday so I still cannot believe that once again she pulled out all the stops.
I am so proud of her.
You can see pictures of the event here

If this doesn't work just look for Kent Standerford, Big Paw Prints photography and go to The Grand National Gallery. He is right now just getting pictures up so it may take him a while.

Emily...MBIF FC Tannochbrae's Feanor, SC, CGC, FCh...finished her ASFA Field Championship on Sunday too and her daughter Hope....Charlbury Hope of Glencrag SC managed to outrun Wist and took a first place in Sunday's Trial...she is the first Deerhound to ever outrun her housemate!!!.
Joan.

Wow that is impressive. She must be so determined. An old horse racer once said you can look at the horse before you buy it but you can't check for the things that matter - the heart and mind of the animal. Wist must have that! Well done

Thats excellent what a superb achievement.

Incidently, I'd be interested to know how you train Wist and Emily for these events. Obviously you need a good dog to start with but a lot also depends on getting them fit enough but injury free too. Elise

Hi Elise,
I live on 3 acres at 7,500 feet so no doubt the high altitiude keeps them in tip top condition.....we have athletes training out here all the time so it must do something good. I raise at least 2 pups together, Wist was raised with a friends Borzoi of the same age. They have access to the property all day and learn to run and play and how to use thier bodies at an early age. I do not "molly coddle" my youngsters, if they fall they soon learn how not to and they get to play with my Galgo's too who really teaches them a thing or two about speed and turning. I keep nails trimmed weekly and check feet a few times a week for sore pads. They get a good quality mostly raw diet, regular grooming and weekly teeth cleaning. I never force exercise on any of my dogs, I never train them with a Bicycle or from a vehicle, when they are tired they can sleep. They all ive in the house in a warm, clean environment which I think plays a part in thier general good health and well being...I personally don't see the point of having Deerhounds then shutting them up in kennels!.
So, no real secrets. Good breeding helps too and knowing what to look for when choosing a pup for performance... those with poor conformation break down very quickly.
Joan.

What a hell of an achievement!!!!!!!

I loved the photo,s and am feeling quite smug as I picked wist out before seeing the name
the photo full stretch that deerhound is amazing! determined to get ever cm out of the ground.

To win this is like winning the Waterloo Cup over here before that got banned

That Deerhound is incredible, brings a tear to see how much Wist wants to do that job

Many many many congratulations!

: )

You should be so proud, I would be

Deerhoundlady, you are rightfully proud of your magnificent Wist; what a feat.

May I ask what her breeding is, and if you have more photos of her?
